PROBLEM STATEMENT: The emerging transition from traditional libraries to digital libraries is leading to changing library environment This situation requires a systematic understanding the implications of such changes on various library services and management of library services in the new digital environment. The other side of this scenario is the resultant changes in user expectations

1.5 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY: To review emerging trends in digital environment in library and information technology areas. To understand present status of digitalization of libraries and the problems or bottlenecks in the process. To find out the views of the librarians, college managements and administrators and consequent budgets and allocations. To study the implications of technology and human interface and access the transformational dimensions and issues. To understand the User expectations and experiences with digital libraries in colleges To suggest measures for effective management of information and library services in digital environment.

MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION SERVICES IN DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT

METHODLOGY AND SAMPLING: Based on the details available on AICTE website and Karnataka Examinations Authority website it was found that there are 167 engineering colleges and 192 MBA colleges in Karnataka. In order to have a fair representation in the sample survey it was decided to cover 30% of the colleges in both engineering and management disciplines.

The researcher collected data with the help of a pre-tested questionnaire from 55 engineering colleges and 64 MBA colleges by using convenience sampling method

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY: Due to time and financial limitations the study has been confined to Karnataka only which could be potential limitation. Confining the study only to University affiliated colleges is also considered as one of the limitations

CHAPTERISATION: This doctoral dissertation is being presented in five chapters: Chapter I Covers Introduction, evolution of digital libraries, issues and challenges in managing digital libraries. Chapter II has been devoted for presenting the digital library environment Chapter III describes the review of literature Chapter IV discusses issues related to the Management of Digital Libraries- Librarians Views Chapter IV presents the User Expectations and Experiences and Chapter V presents Summary Conclusion and Suggestions

MAJOR FINDINGS: The findings of the study point out that the colleges have invested in creating basic digital library facilities but a majority of the libraries covered in the study are far from creating comprehensive digital library environments. Another important factor which has to be addressed is to ensure that the library service providers are adequately trained to ascertain the digital library needs for libraries, help in procuring right technologies and promote the use of various services the digital libraries cannot be allowed to become non-performing assets in colleges.

In conclusion, it is also very important to ensure that focus is increased in digitalizing the conventional library holdings in a phased manner which will make libraries immortal. This research brings out the need for effective planning, budgeting for new technology acquisitions, training and making digital library services user friendly by promoting the extensive use of such services

The thesis comes out with a comprehensive model for establishing and managing digital library services in colleges with focus on assessment of technologies needed, training and strategies for higher degree of user satisfaction.
