Importance of work study

Todays competitive environment

work hardto more productive-production costs can reduced. improving labor productivity improving work methods and simplifying the work reduces cost.

Foundation of work study

Pioneers

Frederick W.Taylor
Frank B.Gilbreth Lillian M.Gilbreth

--the foundation on which modern work study stands is that: Taylors conclusions was "the greatest production results when each worker is given a definite task to be performed in a definite time in a definite manner.

Develop scientific methods for doing job Establish goals for productivity Establish systems of rewards for meeting the goals Train the personnel in how to use the methods and there by meet the goals. F.W.TAYLOR

DEFINITION
WORK STUDY is defined as that : The body of knowledge concerned with the analysis of work methods and the equipments used in performing job, the design of an optimum work method and the standardization of proposed work methods

OBJECTIVES OF WORK STUDY

To analyzing the present method

-- for doing the job, systematically in order to develop a new and better method.
To measure the work content of a job

-- by measuring the time required to do the job -- for a qualified worker and -- hence to establish standard time.

To increase the productivity

-- by ensuring the best possible use of human, machine and material resources and -- to achieve best quality products/services at minimum possible cost.
To improve operational efficiency.

BASIC WORK STUDY PROCEDURE

Select the job/process/operation to be studied.

Record all relevant facts about the job/process using

suitable charting techniques -operation process chart -flow process chart -flow diagram -SIMO chart -man-machine chart

Examine critically all the recorded facts, questioning

the purpose, place, sequence, person and the means of doing the job. Develop the new method for the job/process. Measure the work content and establish the standard time using an appropriate work measurement technique. Define the new method for the job/process. Install the new method for as standard practice. Maintain the new method for the job/process.

BENEFITS
Increased productivity and operational efficiency.

Reduced manufacturing costs.

Better manpower planning Fair wages to employees. Better working conditions. Improved work flow. Provide a standard of performance to measure labor

efficiency. Basis for sound incentive schemes. Provides better job satisfaction.

Reduced material handling costs.
