Tidal power Generation By Using various Techniques

PRESENTED BY M.MUTHU SELVAM K.THANGA DURAI EEE- PRE FINAL YEAR

ABSTRACT
Renewable energy can be used to decrease global dependence on natural resources Tidal power can be the primary form of renewable power utilized. utilizing the power of the oceans by pollution free, tidal power generation. The earth's rotation is also a factor in the production of tides.

.This work emphasizes the possibilities of

INTRODUCTION
The sources for 90% of the electric energy generated today are non-renewable. World energy consumption is expected to rise 60 per cent by 2020. Renewable sources of energy are necessary because the Earth will eventually run out of the resources to create non-renewable energy. Tidal energy is an essentially renewable resource . Tidal power works because of the Moons constant rotation around the Earth.

Ocean Thermal Energy

It's warmer on the surface because sunlight warms the water. But below the surface, the ocean gets very cold. Power plants can be built that use this difference in temperature to make energy. A difference of at least 38 degrees Fahrenheit is needed between the warmer surface water and the colder deep ocean water. Using this type of energy source is called Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion or OTEC.

Renewable Energy
Renewable energy sources capture their energy from existing flows of energy, from on-going natural processes, such as sunshine, wind, flowing water (hydropower), biological processes, and geothermal heat flows Examples of Renewable Energy Sources:
Wind

Hydroelectric

Tidal Power
Tidal power generators derive their energy from movement of the tides. Has potential for generation of very large amounts of electricity, or can be used in smaller scale. Tidal power is not a new concept and has been used since at least the 11th Century in Britain and France. There are a number of places around the world that have adopted pilot projects for different types of tidal generators

Tides

Two current technologies which are used to harness the kinetic energy of tidal flow 1) Drag Devices Water wheels.
2) Lift Devices Turbines.

How it works?
Tidal power works rather like a hydro-electric scheme,. The tidal turbine also offers significant environmental advantages over wind and solar systems; the majority of the assembly is hidden below the water

How do tides changing = Electricity?

As usual, the electricity is provided by spinning turbines.
Two types of tidal energy can be extracted: kinetic energy of currents between ebbing and surging tides and potential energy from the difference in height between high and low tides. The potential energy contained in a volume of water is E = xMg where x is the height of the tide, M is the mass of water and g is the acceleration due to gravity.

SMALL SCALE TIDAL POWER

Basically, the device would be anchored to the bottom of the ocean by a post (with gear notches along one side), just a bit further than the low tide mark. A floating section, provided by a large buoyant device would then float on the surface of the water. The relative motion between the buoyant section and the post would produce

ADVANTAGES
Reduces dependence upon fossil fuels Produces no liquid or solid pollution Little visual impact

A plant is expected to be in production for 75 to 100 years

Not expensive to

DISADVANTAGES
Very expensive to build.

during construction phases. Affects a very wide area the environment is changed for many miles upstream downstream.

CONCLUSION
In a society with increasing energy demands and decreasing supplies, we must look to the future and develop our best potential renewable resource. Tidal power fits the bill, a natural source of energy with many benefits.
