Upper Counterweight Assembly

A burnt bushing shrinks and may come out easily.

A worn bushing might be tight.

Remove the upper counterweight (if equipped with one).
Eccentric

Attempt to lift the bushing with eyebolts threaded into the top of the bushing or try lifting from the bottom of the bushing with a fabricated steel lifting plate, or. Pack the bushing with dry ice before attempting to lift if free, or. Invert the eccentric and press the bushing out.

Eccentric Bushing Installation

There is a slight clearance between the eccentric bushing O.D. and the eccentric bore I.D.. The clearance can range from .002 (.05mm) to .008 (.20mm). Check the surfaces for any imperfections. Trial fit the key in the eccentric & bushing.
Eccentric

Install the key in the bushing and hold it in place by use of rope, wire (preferred), or tape.

Fill the bushing with dry ice and allow to cool for 6 to 8 hours. Liquid nitrogen can be used as an alternative.
Using a spreader bar and the threaded holes on the top of the bushing, lower the bushing into position. Dont hammer the bushing into position if it becomes stuck.

Eccentric bushings have a load zone on one side only, marked A. A The inside diameter may become out of round due to wear, but this out of roundness alone will not render the bushing unserviceable. Bushings with cracks, burns, or heavy scoring should be discarded. Measure the bushing inside diameter at the centerline of the load zone, marked B at 8 (200mm) to 10 (250mm) intervals.

Also measure any other area of apparent damage or hot spots.

In general, all axial dimensions should be within .001 (.025mm) of the smallest dimension measured. B Exception: if a scored location has a dimension above the range shown above on a bushing that otherwise appears serviceable, measure on either side of this location to determine the width and depth of the area. The depth of the scored area should be no more than .005 (.1mm) below the adjacent surfaces.

Eccentric Bushing Inspection

Serviceability Inspection - Page 3 of 4
The total of randomly selected scored areas should not exceed 20% of the shaft contact area.
If uniform axial wear has occurred, maximum clearance should not be more than the maximum clearance listed in the eccentric service specifications table shown to the left. Bushings with excess clearance should be replaced.

Eccentric

When using heating torches (rosebuds), heat the bottom area of the gear marked A and the inside area of the gear marked B. Do not heat the gear teeth directly! Set the heated gear on suitable blocking and lower the eccentric into the gear making sure that the shoulder of the eccentric makes 360 contact with the top of the gear at the area marked C.

Installation Technique - Page 2 of 2
If possible, place cooling air steams around the top interface of the gear and eccentric at the area marked C so that the gear seizes to the eccentric first to prevent the gear from creeping down as it cools. Bore distortion is usually caused by high heat or high crushing pressures. A High heat can cause inward distortion while high crushing pressures may cause bore taper or out of roundness.

Take bore measurements in three vertical planes 60 apart beginning at the pinionshaft location marked A. Measurements on the vertical plane should be about 3 (75mm) apart for the full length of the bore. Also measure wherever there is discoloration or any evidence of bore defect.

All axial diameter readings should be within .002 (.05mm) of each other. A No inward bulge or other imperfection should be more than .001 (.025mm) higher than the normal plane of the bore surface.

If it is necessary to clean up the bore, the final result should not cause the bore to be larger than the maximum allowable as shown in the table marked bottom shell bore and bushing service specifications.
