WHAT IS ASTHMA?

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that obstructs airflow

The obstruction is reversible

It involves difficulty in breathing due to ~Inflammation (swelling) ~Mucus in the airways ~Tightening of muscles around the airways

WHAT SUBSTANCES TRIGGER ASTHMA?

1)Extrinsic asthma 2) Intrinsic Asthma

3) Exercise-Induced Asthma 4) Cough induce asthma 5) Occupational Asthma

Types of asthma
6) Nocturnal Asthma 7) Allergy asthma 8) Drug induce asthma 9)Acute severe asthma 10) Near fatal asthma

EXERCISE-INDUCED ASTHMA
Difficulty in getting air in & out of the lungs because of inflammation of the bronchial tubes (airways) & extra mucus. Symptoms occurs 5-10 min after excercise Does not produce long-term increase in airway activity Exercise-induced asthma never have symptoms while they are not physically exerting themselves.

COUGH-INDUCED ASTHMA
Cough-induced asthma is one of the most difficult asthmas to diagnose. Main symptom is a dry, non-productive cough The doctor has to eliminate other possibilities, such as chronic bronchitis, post nasal drip due to hay fever, or sinus disease. In this case the coughing can occur alone, without other asthma-type symptoms being present. The coughing can happen at any time of day or night.

OCCUPATIONAL ASTHMA
This type of asthma is triggered by something in the patient's place of work. Occupational asthma tends to occur soon after the patients starts a new job and disappears not long after leaving that job. Symptoms attributed to particular occupation

NOCTURNAL ASTHMA
Nocturnal asthma occurs between midnight and 8 AM. It is triggered by allergens in the home or is caused by sinus conditions. May have wheezing/ SOB when lying down and may not notice these symptoms until awoken by them in the middle of the night - usually between 2 and 4 AM. Nocturnal asthma may occur only once in a while or frequently during the week.

ALLERGIES AND ASTHMA

Allergic rhinitis (also called hay fever) is inflammation of the inside lining of the nose & is the most common chronic allergic disease- increased sensitivity to a substance. This causes -bodys immune cells to release histamines in response to contact with the allergens. Histamines along with other chemicals lead to allergy symptoms. Constant runny nose, ongoing sneezing, swollen nasal passages, excess mucus, weepy eyes, and a scratchy throat. A cough may result from the constant postnasal drip.

DRUG INDUCED ASTHMA

Asthma provoked by drugs:

1.

2.
3.

Aspirin induced asthma (and other none steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) Beta blockers Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI)

ACUTE SEVERE ASTHMA

Progression of attack of bronchospasm to the point where the patient is breathless at rest. there maybe silent chest which become audible later on with improvement of the attack.

NEAR FATAL ASTHMA

It is progressive acute severe asthma with imminent respiratory arrest.
