Title of Research

The Rise of Internet Piracy Among College Students

Background
The rise of internet availability also increases the piracy rate where people are downloading intellectual property illegally The majority community involved are the students where their fast pace lifestyle sometimes ignores the fact that downloading without paying and acknowledgement is a crime. (Bonner,O'Higgins,2002)

Problem Statement
Student especially are downloading intelectual property that is available online illegally.(Siegfrid and Ashley, 2001) There is a significant rise in online piracy although there is law. Some of them are not even aware of such laws. The problem will have a negative impact on the industry threathening the progress of software developers, record labels, filmamaker, writers and many other online resources.

RQ1 : How far are students involved in piracy particularly internet piracy?
Bonner,&O'Higgins(2002) studies on ethical perspective in music shows results that student will engage in illegal downloading more so than those who are non-students. Students generally felt that copying commercial software and downloading music from the Internet was acceptable(Siegfried and Ashley,2001) There is a general impression that anything a person can access free of charge is allowed to be downloaded. Student lack of awareness to distinguish material placed in public domain which a copyright protection.(Cohen and Cornwell,2003)

RQ 2: What internet piracy act and method that are available and student attitude towards them?
Apples solution, iTunes operated based on a client-server distribution model with tight integration of all stages of content delivery (Ramon and Andreas,2009) The bulk of SOPA(stop internet piracy act) and PIPA(protect internet IP address) is a set of public and private mechanisms intended to give American, Malaysian, Iranian copyright holders tools to combat offshore infringers(Jonathan and Alicia,2011)

RQ3: What is the impact of online piracy to the industry?
Digital piracy is sweeping through global markets for music, motion pictures and video, television programming, literature and software. In its wake, these creative industries suffer devastating economic losses and an assault on their ability to compensate artists and furnish legitimate employment opportunities(TERA Consultants,2008) Vice versa outcome where in the research of Oberholzer and Strumpf (2005) studied peer-to-peer file sharing and found that there was no significant effect on album sales.

The birth of file sharing and the very large decline in CD sales that immediately followed is a powerful piece of evidence on its own.(Stan J.Liebowitz University,2006 )

Research Question/Objective
Objective 1: To find out students attitude towards online piracy and how regular are they involved in online piracy. Objective 2: To find out whether students are aware of the piracy act and laws and does it have impact on student attitude on online piracy. Objective 3: To find out the impact of piracy to the industry

Scope of study
The study was conducted among the college students in Petaling Jaya. Questionnaires to 100 students aged between 20-28

Significance of Study
This study gave us a further understanding about: -students attitude to online piracy -awareness of students towards cyber law - the impact of piracy on the industry.

METHODOLOGY
Quantitative approach(numbers and statistics as evidence). The research was conducted at Petaling Jaya area. Petaling Jaya population= 520 712,population aged 2028=120 000(Tip Top Globe,2012) Yamane formula is used to determine sample size.100 students was chosen. Convenient sampling was used to increase accuracy and reduce biasness. Respondent chosen randomly between the age of 2028

Methodology
From the 100 survey questionnaire, all of it was distributed online via Facebook and email and some of it was through face to face survey.(from 30th July -4th August) Data was collected and measured. The data measured is then tabulated to give a better perspective of the statistic.

Variable of Study

Data Finding/Analysis(RO1)
Mean Calculation:(How many hours on average do you spend on the internet per day?) On average, student spends nearly 5 hours in a day using the internet. From the 100 respondent,64% of students are involved downloading copyrighted material whether they are aware of it or not..Cohern, Cornwel (1989),Siegfried,Ashley(2006),Bonner,Higgins(2010) All three research result goes hand in hand where by students are the majority that downloads material illegally. They have a perception that internet should be an open source and the tight monthly allowance dont allow them to purchase the music. They use this material for entertainment and education purpose.-internet availability, digital player, website that offers material for free.

Data Finding/Analysis(RO2)
Only 28% of them are aware of such laws and acts but still downloading and 33% are not aware of such law. -lack of exposure-malaysian cyber law focused on sedition laws online Casadesus-Masanell,and Andres HervasDrane(2010)=students prefers pay-to-download contradicts with this research where students prefer free download due to their current income that relies on monthly allowance.

Data Finding/Analysis(RO3)
48% of the respondent agree that their illegal downloading behavior would not have effect on the industry -they purchase the album after downloading. -they go for concerts and sessions -they watch movies in the theatre then download the film

Oberholzer and Strumpf (2005),goes along with their research where student purchase albums after listening to the sample that they download.
Kal Raustiala and Chris Sprigman(2012) concluded that money that we dont spend in downloading still goes to the other industry.(product placement). Student agrees that they buy product that the see or listen in they downloaded material.

Conclusion
The is definitely a significant rise is the number of students involved in online piracy in college. Most students are not aware about the law and most agree that they would involve less if there is law monitoring them. The online piracy definitely has influence in the industry both positive and negative.

Recommendation
To conduct further study on students attitude to the cyber law and how efficient the law is to cope piracy. To study the perception of student on the concept of internet being an open source

Implication
Artist should find alternative ways such as making more concerts and live sessions as a way to generate income. Government must introduce cyber law and methods to student since preschools and monitor closely the behavior of students online.
