Fabric Thickness Gauge

The thickness of a fabric gives information of its warmth or thermal insulation, resilience ,dimensional stability , fabric stiffness , abrasion during use. In reality it is rarely measured as fabric is very sensitive to pressure as it is a compressible material. Instead fabric weight per unit area is used commercially. Fibers in a fabric enclose lots of air which is responsible for insulation purpose or properties. When a fabric is compressed the space between fibers is decreased and they start touching each other. There are 3 stages of Deformation taking place during testing-a) individual fibers are getting compressed ,b) inter yarn friction c) lateral compression of fibers. During 1st and 3rd stages elastic deformation if taking place. In second stage it is difficult to overcome frictional forces.

FABRIC THICKNESS PRINCIPLE

Features of Fabric Thickness Gauge: Determines the thickness of yarns, fabrics, paper, etc. Range of measurement: 0 - 10 mm. Accurately and conveniently performs thickness measurement. Supplied with calibration & inspection certificates. Consists of a dial micro meter with a flat pressure foot and a flat anvil. Fabric Thickness Gauge confirms with the following international standards: ISO 3616/5084/9073 ASTM D 1777 Fabric Testing Instrument determines the thickness of zari, yarn, fabric, paper, and film samples accurately. Thickness Gauge is calibrated, of extreme fine quality and accurately and conveniently performs testing pertaining to thickness measurement.

How Fabric Thickness Gauge Works?

The fabric sample that is to be measured is kept on an anvil. The press foot is gently lowered on to the specimen. The reading of the dial gauge is taken to get the thickness of the specimen. The flat circular indenter of the micro-meter exerts the specified pressure on the fabric sample. The Dial Indicator measures the thickness in mm. The above procedure is repeated to obtain the values of thickness at least at 3 different locations. The mean value of all the readings of thickness determined to the nearest 0.01m is calculated and the result is the average thickness of the sample under test.
