Global warming or climate change is the
gradual increase of the average temperature
of the Earth
The average temperature of the Earth's
surface is around 59˚F or 13 ˚C. Greenhouse
Gases in the atmosphere hold in heat
*Without these gases, the Earth’s surface
temperature would drop to around 0 ˚F.
Temperature Change…
Global surface temperature increased
0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) during
the 100 years ending in 2005.
Climate model projections summarized
by the IPCC indicate that average
global surface temperature will likely
rise a further 1.1 to 6.4 °C (2.0 to
11.5 °F) during the twentyfirst century.
Greenhouse Gases
Greenhouse gases are the reason there
is Global Warming which is trapping
heat in the earth.
Greenhouse gases are caused naturally
and covers the earth in a blanket, and is
caused by Carbon Dioxide and fossil
fuels.
Thinning of the ozone layer
The thinning of the ozone layer is mainly
due to chlorofluorocarbons (CFC).
Once in the stratosphere, CFC are
broken down by ultraviolet rays.
As a result, the highly reactive chlorine
radicals (Cl) are release.
These chlorine radicals break down
ozone molecules, O3 in a chain reaction.
Chlorofluorocarbons
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are a
group of manmade substances
containing chlorine, fluorine and
carbon. They were invented in the
1930s for use in fridges, but have
other uses, including aerosols.
CAUSES
&
EFFECTS
The Effects
Water levels will rise in oceans
The timing of the seasons will change
Increased spread of disease
Stronger hurricanes and storms
Animals change behavior
More plant & animals will become extinct
The temperature will rise
Effects on sea levels
Warmer Seas and Melting Ice
When the Earth warms, the oceans will
warm and expand causing an increase in
the level of the sea
Flooding
Higher sea levels will threaten the low
lying coastal areas of the world such as
the Netherlands and Bangladesh.
Effects on agriculture
Food & Water Shortages
The effect of a change in weather on plant
growth may lead to food and water
shortages in some countries of the world.
LowLying Land
Lowlying agricultural land is at risk from
rising sea levels.
Effects on health
Effects of Warmer Temperatures
Warm temperatures can increase local
air pollution, which in turn can lead to
an increase in breathing problems and
respiratory diseases.
Effects on health
Effects of Extreme Events
Extreme events may lead to a large
number of deaths at a set time. For
example, a landslide or flood could wipe
out a large number of people. Events
like this are set to increase as global
warming takes place.
Effects on health
Infectious Diseases
Many infectious diseases only appear in
warm areas. Warmer trends would
enable insects and other disease
carriers to expand their range.
Mosquitoes and other insects will
spread further across the globe.
Walking or Biking
Fossil fuel gives off the most greenhouse
gases.
To use less fossil fuel, you should walk or
bike to school or work if you are near.
It will save energy and cause less
greenhouse gases which will be a big
help to stop Global Warming.
Trees
Trees help by absorbing
26 pounds of
greenhouse gases each
year.
They can give us
oxygen to help us
breathe.
One tree produces
enough oxygen for a
family of four!
Saving Energy
In order to stop global
warming we have to save
energy. Fossil fuel energy
produces greenhouse
gases. They are the main
thing we need to stop.
Shut things that use fossil
fuel off after you are done
using it as much as
possible. It will help!
Recycling
Recycling helps save
energy and lets you
reuse things over and
over again.
To make things fun you
can make crafts out of
the stuff you recycle.
So please recycle cans,
bottles, and aluminum
to save energy.
You can recycle old
products that use a lot
of energy to get energy
efficient things. So
Please Save Energy.

Thank You!
