CD Covers

From Alternative Dance

Though Alternative Dance is very similar to Indie Dance, it is made different by its use of electronic beats.

Representation of Passion Pits album

Colour: The colours used are very femine as pink is used as the background which contracts to the gender of Passion Pit as they are male artists. This can be interpreted as viewing the group as open minded, not limited by other peoples expectations. Image: You can vaguely see a head made from the random paint drops. You can see long wavy hair and a small head, this suggests that these paint drops are trying to draw a girl. This explains the reason why they picked pink as a background to bring out the femine side of the girl that was drawn. Font: The font used is simplistic, its not eye catching. The theme of feminity is kept consistent, as the picture is femine and so is the font of the words. Layout: The picture is given more frame in comparison to the words, almost as if the picture is supposed to dominate the album. Iconography: The emphasis of feminity suggest that the songs on the album are about a female. This links the album design to the group by revealing the messages behind their songs.

Alternative Dance is identified through its signature style. Having Paint all over the cover makes the design seen spontaneous. Narrative

elterectonic beats wave across the dance floor, as Alternative Dance uses electronic beats.

The left side is dominates the frame because it looks more sophiscated. It makes the drawings on the right seem important. The layout is organised, as the eye catching drawing is played directly under the name of the artist and album name. Suggesting that the drawing is there to empahise the unique nature and style of the artists.

The same concept is visual in Sbtrkts CD cover, as the artist dominates the album cover

Representation of SBTRKTs CD cover

Image: the picture of SBTRKT looks like a smug shot or passport picture as there is no emotion present just a picture of his mask. Font: There is no words on the album cover as if the picture of the man wearing a mask is all the words you need to read. Almost as if the mask generalises both his music and his character as an artist as he is widely known for wearing that mask. Layout: The layout is simplistic, the album is made up of an image of the artist against a black wall. There is no effort to make the album stand out or appear artistic. Iconography: The album is dominated by black colour, it starts from the front and goes on to the back almost as if the colour black spreads like a flu. The majority of SBTRKTs videos are dominated by black or start from a black screen, this theory links the album covers image to the representation of the artist.

Alternative dance is known for the music it produces, though it can be easily produced through electronic equipment. By giving Sbtrkt dominance over the album cover, it allows the viewers to focus on the artist. The mug shot allows Sbtrkts uniqueness to be recognised, as not every artist constantly wears a mask.

By placing only Sbtrkts face on the front cover without his name or album name and then putting his name and song titles at the back. The album cover subconsciously uses these micro elements to say that the artist should come before his music, that we should recognise Sbtrkt as an artist rather than the guy that produces the tracks. The Barcode is played sideways on the back, as if the fact that this CD cover is a product like any other, it is not important. The barcode looks out of place, as the song list and Sbtrktss face look bigger in comparison to the small barcode. This makes the barcode lack significance and places emphasis on the artist.

Pendulum makes its album cover look mysterious through its choice of colour, layout and design.

Representation of Pendulums Album Cover

Colour: The picture is dominated with green drawings ranging from dark green to light green. However, green isnt the colour that takes your attention when you first look at the picture, in fact its the blue drawing around the eye because it emphasises the eye. Image: The image is an open eye to show that the viewers are being watched, maybe by one of the members. The theme of i can see you is emphasised through the eye. The pupil is dark grey which is a sad colour to hint that the album is dominated by sad songs. Font: The font is masculine, its the type of writing you would see on a video game. As if this album computerised in other words its not human or the emotions expressions are out of this world. This makes the album look mysterious. Layout: The artist and the album name is separated by the colour, as Pendulum is white font with black background. Whereas the album title hold your colour is small black ink with a smaller white background to suggest that the album title is not as important as the group name. Iconography: The album links to the representation of the group as it is dominated by cold colours. (blue and dark green) The emotions present in the majority of Pendulums music is a theme of mystery centred on something cold, this same theme is present in the album cover. As if the album cover is trying to summarise the character of the group.
