Bean Sprout: Application Data Tracker for Early Childhood Development

Mobile application concept prototype can be found: http://gmagiros.appspot.com/app/bean.htm

Team Name: CDG Courtney Coleman, Denise Dantzler, and George Magiros

The Problem

Parents, educators and medical professionals have the need and desire to monitor childrens cognitive and developmental progress. Currently, there is not a convenient and cohesive method to access, track, and store early childhood cognitive and developmental progress data (ages 0 to 5 years).

As a result, cognitive and developmental delays are often not addressed in a timely fashion.

Problem Validation: Justification for Bean Sprout from the Voices of Potential Users
Parent Thoughts... 1. There is a breakdown in
communication between themselves and the educator. 2. The application should be based on objective that is qualitative and quantitative.

Educator Thoughts... 1.
1. There is a breakdown in communication between themselves and the parent.

1. Parents do not often realize that there are

developmental or cognitive issues in a child until they enter kindergarten or first grade.

3. Parents would like to know possible interventions they can pursue if their childs cognitive development concerns them.

1. Current technologies available for tracking

academic data often increases the workload for them.

Preliminary Early Childhood Development Research

1. There are 4 primary domains of childhood development: physical development, social & emotional development, thinking skills, and communication skills. (Center for Disease Control) 2. Less than one percent of young children with emotional behavioral problems are identified. (CPC Columbia University)

3. Nearly 55 percent of family practitioners and pediatricians report that they did not use a standardized tool to screen for developmental delays during routine well-child visits for two-year olds. (CPC Columbia University)
4. Nearly two to three times more preschool age children exhibit symptoms of traumarelated impairment than are diagnosed. (CPC Columbia University)

BeanSprout: Bridging the Gap

BeanSprout is an innovative paperless solution for childhood development tracking and reporting educators and parents can enter a child's developmental progress daily using a easy to navigate interface. The application will quantify the entered data and produce a report that can be presented to parents, other educators, administrators and medical professionals. The collected documentation can be collected over the course of the first five years of a child's life and ultimately will have the ability to be exported

Other Features That Could be Considered

1. A place where parents can get information about how to best assist their child if they are behind in meeting developmental milestones. These recommendations can be input from educators, physicians, and other parents who have experience with the same concerns.
2. A place where parents can input doctors appointments and other to-dos for their the child . 3. A place for teachers to document the interventions they themselves have taken to see that the child is meeting with developmental progress.

How BeanSprout would work with the Shared Learning Collaborative Model Bean sprout provides a documentation tool for regular ongoing assessment data based on daily observations

An example of a Bean Sprout assessment item would be a Motor Skill developmental milestone, such as standing up for the first time or walking.

Bean sprout assesses four primary categories of development are used when teachers and parents use status messages to create information.
