Introduction:
You were in the bus stop one morning when you yawned in drowsiness. Without knowing, bacteria entered and settled in your throat. After a couple of days, you felt a sore on your throat so you went to a doctor to check it out. According to him, every minute the bacteria multiply.
It is important to know the precise number of bacteria in order to prescribe the right amount of medicine. To calculate the number of bacteria, we need to use exponential function to facilitate computation. Now, imagine for a moment without exponential function. How was your doctor supposed to know the number of bacteria that settled in your throat? How do you think youd be able to get cure?
In situation like this, exponential function is very useful. Scientist, investors and even electric engineers know the importance of Exponential Function. In the previous unit we learned about Polynomial Function. In this activity, we will begin learning about non-algebraic function called exponential function, in the form ax (as standard form).
We will know its definition, graph and equation using some websites that provide an overview about it. As you read each website ( listed under resources ), you look for answers to the questions listed below. After completing the six question, answer the Big Question. You will work as a group of two members each. Make sure to help each other in answering the questions of the activity.
QUESTIONS:
1. What is the standard form of Exponential Function? 2.Give the similarities between the graph of y = ex and the graph of y = e-x? 3.Is Logarithmic Function an inverse function of Exponential Function? Explain.
4. If f(x)=2x. Find the values of y when x {0,1,2,3}. If $400 is invested at an annual rate of 6.0% compounded monthly, what will be the final value of the investment after 10 years? What is a transcendental function? Is Exponential Function a transcendental function?
