CLUTCH
Clutch is a mechanism used in transmission system of a vehicle to transmits the rotary motion of one shaft when desired to second shaft of which axis are coincident with that of first.

A coupling device is used to separate the engine and transmission when necessary.

Types of clutch :Single plate clutch Multiplate clutch Cone clutch Centrifugal clutch

Single plate clutch


It has only one clutch plate, mounted on the hub which is spline internally and free to slides over the clutch shaft . It consist of flywheel, pressure plate, clutch plate with friction lining, thrust and ball bearing and clutch springs. Single plate are generally used for four wheeler only torque transmitted to the radius of the clutch plate.

Multiple clutch plate


It is the modification of single plate clutch where increase the number of frictional plate. One set of friction plate slides in longitudinal grove of flywheel and other one slides on splines on the pressure plate hub . This type of clutch is used in heavy transport and racing car where very high torque is transmitted.

Cone clutch
The cone clutch is consist of friction surface in the shape of cone. The engine shaft is consist of female cone and male cone is mounted on clutch shaft with is spline and male cone is free to slide over clutch shaft. It is used in earth moving equipment ,vice chain , etc.

Centrifugal clutch
It uses centrifugal force ,instead of spring force for keeping it in engaged position, it does not required clutch pedal for operating a clutch . The vehicle can be stop in gear without stalling the engine and drive can started a vehicle selecting any gear. It is extensively used in light two wheelers like moped or two wheeler without gear.

Gear box
The device used to Increase the speed of vehicle Get the required torque at starting Get the required speed as we increases the escalator.

Types of gear box


A)Selective gear box 1.sliding mesh type gear box 2.constant mesh gear box
B)Placatory gear transmission 1.epicyclic gear type 2.automatic transmission a) torque convertor b) electric type

Sliding mesh type gear box


Always in mesh with a gear on the lay shaft All the time rotating when the engine is running and the clutch is engaged. Three direct and one reverse speeds are attained by suitably moving the gear on the main shaft

All the gears are in constant mesh with the corresponding gears on the lay shaft.

Dog clutches are provided


1st gear: dog clutch is sided to the left 2nd gear: slide to right Low gear: right dog clutch to the left Reverse gear: right dog clutch to the right

Synchromesh gear box


Similar to the constant mesh type.

Constant mesh with the corresponding gears on the lay shaft.


The gears on the lay shaft are fixed to it Gear on the main shaft are free to rotate on the same shaft. Synchromesh device is used. It avoids the necessity of double declutching.

Epicyclic gear type


It consist of a) Sun gear b) Two placatory gear c) Carrier d) Casing It is also called as overdrive. & It helps the propeller shaft to rotate faster than the speed of engine

Its principle is: The working fluid is thrown by the centrifugal force . When impeller rotate with engine speed the centrifugal force is generated and the fluid is thrown on the turbine &then on the stator.

THE MAIN ADVANTAGE OF THIS TORQUE CONVERTOR IS IT TRNSMITTS MORE POWER TO MAIN SHAFT AS COMPAIRED TO THE ENGINE SHAFT.

Propeller shaft
It connect the transmission shaft to the bevel pinion shaft of differential at the wheel axial. It is also called as drive shaft. It transmit motion at an angle which is varying frequently.
It adjust the change in length between gear box and rear axial

Types of propeller shaft:1. Hotch kiss drive. 2. Torque tube drive.

Hotch kiss drive.


It consist of leaf spring and a propeller shaft with two universal joint. The driving and braking torques are absorbed through the front half of rear leaf spring. During driving and breaking the bevel pinion changes the position so the angle of propeller shaft changes which will be adjusted by universal joint and sliding joint.

Torque tube drive.


In the torque tube drive, the propeller shaft is enclosed in a hollow tube. the tube incorporate bearing which support the propeller shaft. Only the universal joint is necessary on this type of joint.
