HISTORY
MAGNETIC FLOW METER
These flow meters debuted in Holland in
1952. Magnetic flow meters use wire coils
mounted outside of a pipe. A voltage runs
through the coils, generating a magnetic
field inside the pipe. As the conductive
liquid passes through the pipe, a
separate voltage emanates from the
system. This voltage relates to the flow
rate and is detectable.
INTRODUCTION
MAGNECTIC FLOW METER
The most common flow meter apart from the
mechanical flow meters, is the
magnetic flow meter, commonly referred to
as a "mag meter" or an "electromag".
A magnetic field is applied to the
metering tube, which results in a
potential difference proportional to the
flow velocity perpendicular to the flux
lines.
• GAUGING ROD
Gauge rod is a graduated rod for
measuring the capacity of barrels,
casks, etc.
Gauging rod known as direct
measurement which is easy, simple
and is used for the purpose of local
indication.
REQUIREMENT
product’s quality,
equipment’s and worker’s
safety and reduce losses.
PRINCIPLES
MAGNETIC FLOW METER
The physical principle at work is Faraday's law
of electromagnetic induction.
E is prop ortio nal t o V x B x
D
Where:
E = the voltage generated in a conductor
V = the velocity of the conductor
B = the magnetic field strength
D = the length of the conductor

GAUGING ROD
Relative movement between the end anchor
and the reference tube is measured with
either a dial depth gauge.
Alternatively several rods may be
installed radially in a single large hole
of each rod within its sleeve.
TYPES
MAGNETIC FLOW METER
Wafer-style, where highest accuracy (up
to +0.5% of reading) measurements are
required.
Insertion-style, for greater economy and
particularly for larger pipe sizes. All
OMEGA® magnetic flow meters employ the
state-of-the-art dc pulsed magnetic field
system. The following discussion details
the principle of operation, as well as
the advantages, of dc pulsed type
magnetic flow meter.

APPLICATION
MAGNETIC FLOW METER
The magnetic flow meter can handle a wide variety of
applications.
Water
A variety of industrial effluents
Paper pulp
Mining slurries
Brine
Sludge
Liquid food products
Detergents
Sewage
Corrosive acids
Solid bearing fluids
Electrolytes
Process chemicals
Problemliquids also are included
such as:-
o petroleum products
o crude oil
o deionized water
o vegetable/animal fats.
GAUGING ROD
The monitoring of rock and soil movements
including:-
Relaxation of rock around tunnels and other
underground openings
Foundation settlements
Monitoring of subsidence
Control of natural and cut slopes, quarry and mining
excavations.
Displacements of retaining walls, bridges
piers and abutments
ADVANTAGES
MAGNETIC FLOW METER
Obstruction less flow and virtually no pressure
drop.
insensitivity to viscosity, specific gravity,
temperature and pressure (within certain
limitations).
have good accuracy (0.5 to 1%) and no moving
parts.
can handle slurries and heavy particulates and
also lining protectors available.
available in a wide variety of communication
protocols.
GAUGING ROD
Stainless steel
Infinite resolution
Very high accuracy
Precision linear bearings
Miniature
High cycle life
Reliable, accurate, simple to install and read
Free from creep, kinking and other inaccuracies associated with
tensioned wire systems.
The simple single rod instrument is ideal for safety monitoring
during construction activities.
Monitoring and control of construction by the New Austrian
Tunneling Method (NATM).
Can be connected to Vibrating Wire displacement transducers for
remote reading and data logging.
