The advert as the top gives a cleaner finish to the cover and the yellow colour contrasts to the blue colour scheme to make them stand out off the page more. The yellow runs through for all of the adverts for the magazine or merchandise. The Masthead takes up the width of the page and is in a distinctive colour which isnt generic across the magazine; the colour of the masthead changes depending on the issue. The name dropping is in blue to match the colour scheme and also to show that that is what the article is based on. Underneath these are the sub titles or brief bit of information to show what the article will actually be about. This part is in black to set it apart from the rest of the cover line and also to show that its not as important.
FRONT COVER
The cover image is of the lead singer of a band rather than the whole band because it gives a more professional look to the magazine rather than the chaotic look which tends to accompany images with more than one person. The image is also in front of the masthead which shows that the masthead is easily recognisable by the font and context. The artist in the photo is also wearing black which contrasts to the lighter colour of the background and the medium shot of him allows us to see the emphasis of his body language; his hand is pointing at the cover line linked to the image. The main cover line is in a different colour to the other cover lines which shows its important and the reader is expected to read that one first. It is also red which connotes the importance of the cover line. It is also positioned with relevance to the cover image so it is easy to see that that cover line is associated with the main image. The use of puffs in the corner fills any remaining white space. The two smaller images of the posters that will be inside are outlined in yellow to show they are associated with the posters advertisement in the banner at the top of the cover. The use of smaller images breaks up all the text that is on the page to allow the reader to see that the magazine isnt mainly text based. They are also used as selling points to persuade the readers into buying the magazine.
The background is plain/ light colour with a slight pattern on but not enough to focus on. This gives a sophisticated look because we know that all of our attention is meant to go on the image and then the cover lines. Having a busy background can sometimes distract the reader into not looking at the information being given and can give a chaotic look as the reader is expected to focus on too many things at once. The short snappy cover lines are in the left hand corner to show that they are not as important as the others. However, using short snappy titles persuades the reader to buy the magazine to find out what they are actually about such as five finger death punch.
Instead of using the masthead again on the contents page, they have used their logo which is smaller but as easily recognisable as the masthead so that the reader is still aware of what magazine they are reading. It is also in front of the images which the opposite to what it is on the front cover with the image in front of the masthead. This gives the logo an embossed look to show its importance. The contents is largely image based which again contrasts the simplicity of the front cover. However, none of the photos over lap and are evenly spaced out which implies the magazine is also well laid out and will be easier to read and understand. The headings are the same as the headings written in the actual contents part of the page but they are in white which contrasts to the dark tone of the images. The headings are in red to link to the colour scheme of the page and also to connote importance in contrast to the black of the writing underneath. The list of pages isnt in a list as they are typically seen on contents pages. Theyre written in a paragraph, one after the other with the main title of the article in bold so that it is easy to distinguish where each page starts. This saves space to allow for the page to be mainly image based which appeals to reader more as they dont have to read as much as the target audience is roughly between 15 and 24.
CONTENTS
The feature image doesnt include a sub heading as the others do. Instead, there is a pull quote used to show that that page includes an interview of some sort. This is used instead of a sub heading because there is also a page number there so the reader could look at that page number below and see that it is in the feature section of the magazine. The pull quote is in black and red to follow the colour scheme and also to highlight which part of the quote they deem to be the most important as red is associated with importance.
The Editors note box is also in red which again connotes importance. It is also set in a speech bubble to imply it is directly the editors words which gives it more value as the readers know it is talking to them. It is also positioned above a photo of the Editor so the audience can associate the words with an actual person. It is also positioned In the bottom left to suggest its not what the magazine want you to read first but probably last as its the last thing youll look at before turning the page.
DOUBLE PAGE
The article continues on the opposite side of the next page to break up the writing so that it doesnt look as much to read. This is because the target audience are seen to be more interested in image based articles rather than words because of their age.
The article is placed over the top of the image to show that the writing should get more focus than the image. The copy is quite small and there an image of an album cover is used instead of a drop cap to introduce the article. The use of quotation marks indicate that the article is written from a member of the bands perspective. The writing is also quite informal to appeal to the younger target audience which is around 15 to 24 years. It was obvious that shit went down is colloquial language that the audience are familiar with which allows them to relate to the artists.
The image takes up the entire double page spread which allows for all of the white space to be taken up. The clothes that the band are wearing are dark as well as the background which gives a serious feel to the article as there isnt much action in it. The image doesnt really associate to the article, it just shows us who the article is about. The person on the right who is sitting down is seen to be as less important as he is sitting down and is behind the others.
There is a brief introduction to the article at the top but the faintness of the writing makes it harder to read which implies that that isnt what the editor wants the audience to focus on; ts just there for those readers who arent familiar with the magazine or their layout. As the pull quote is quite bold in contrast to the copy of the articles and the dull background, it catches the attention of the reader first which makes it act as a title. The page number and title of the magazine are in the bottom corner of the pages to follow the house style and to give a neat finish to the pages.
