BOFORS DEAL !!
Government of INDIA and A.B.BOFORS in Sweden on March 24,1986 for the supply of 410 field howitzers ammunition and other accessories as part of the 155mm gun system at a total cost of Rs.1,437.72 crores.

BOFORS SCAM?
Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and several others were accused of receiving kickbacks from Bofors AB for winning a bid to supply India's 155mm field howitzer. It has been speculated that the scale of the scandal was to the tune of Rs.400million. At 6% of the total contract amount, these business charges amount to a whopping Rs600 crore on a Rs10,000 crore deal.

HOW THE SCAM EXPOSED

Dagens Eko (The news service of Swedish Public Radio). The case came to light during Vishwanath Pratap Singh's tenure as defense minister , and was revealed through investigative journalism by Chitra Subramaniam and N.Ram of the newspapers the Indian Express and the Hindu.

VIOLATION OF LAW
Violation of Prevention of Corruption Act,1947 read with sections 409,420,468 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code Violation of the defense policies and rules and harmed the public exchequer , besides committing breach of propriety.

ROLE OF CBI

EFFECTS OF BOFORS SCAM

Indian National Congress bungled and lost the general election in 1989. The scandal broke Rajiv Gandhis honest corruption free image in public . Formation of Joint parliamentary committee to investigate the case.

 V.P.Singh was dismissed as defense minister as well as from the congress party. BOFORS becomes synonymous to the top level bureaucratic corruption. Defense material procurement procedure changed citing the high level of corruption involved in this case

CONTRADICTIONS
The deal was worth 1437.72 crore that time. The kickbacks were sighted to be to the tune of Rs 64crore ,but the probe cost Rs250crore in a time span of 18years. The HC ruled ,prosecution has failed to prove that the Hinduja BrothersGopichand ,Prakash chandand Sri chandwere linked to the kickbacks in the Bofors deal.

No concrete steps in anyway taken where arrests or freezing of assets stashed abroad have been done. Nor CBI nor any other agency or ministry has been able to bring about any money involved in the case.

SETBACKS
Win chadda death was a major setback. Rajiv gandhi was cleared of the bribe case. Former defence secretary Bhatnagar died of cancer

END OF CASE
The Bofors saga may at last be over with the Delhi High Court's verdict quashing the charges of criminal conspiracy and cheating against the Hinduja Brothers and the Bofors company
