What is copyright?

Why is copyright important for musicians?

Copyright
Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988

Copyright and copyright works (1) Copyright is a property right which subsists in accordance with this Part in the following descriptions of work (a) original literary, dramatic, musical or artistic works (b) sound recordings, films, broadcasts or cable programmes, and

(c) the typographical arrangement of published editions.

Copyright rewards the making of, and investment in, creative works while also recognising the need for use to be made of those works. If certain criteria are met, copyright gives the creator (the author) of the work exclusive rights over certain uses of those works. For example, the author of a work has the exclusive right to allow or prevent the copying of their work or the performance of their work in public. These rights are called economic rights.

As well as economic rights over their works, authors of literary, musical, dramatic and artistic works (and directors of films) are given moral rights, for example, to be named as the author of the work.
