Keeping the stress low. Eliminate any stressor that is possible.

WHAT IS STRESS?
Stress is term used to describe the physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses to events that are appraised as threatening or challenging.
Unpleasant emotion that results from the perception of danger.

The source of stress is known as stressor.

THE STRESS RESPONSE


Walter Canon said that extreme cold,lack of oxygen and emotional experiences all had the capacities to initiate a fight/flight. Fight(destroy,remove or weaken the threat) Flight(distance oneself from the threat) During STRESS, heart rate, blood pressure and respiration all increase.

Autonomic Nervous System


Sympathetic system-responds to stressful events Parasympathetic system - restores the body to normal functioning after the stress has ceased.

GENERAL ADAPTATION SYNDROME (GAS)


Hans Selyes three-stage model for an organisms response to stressors. 3 stages : a) Alarm b) Resistance c) Exhaustion

Alarm characterized by sympathetic arousal and mental clarity Resistance characterized by coping with ongoing stress Exhaustion characterized by depletion of physical and psychological resources

COPING WITH STRESS


Coping Strategies Actions that people can take to master, tolerate, reduce, or minimize the effects of stressors. 3 types of coping: Problem-focused coping - Try to eliminate the source of stress or reduce its impact through direct actions. - Example: a student might have a problem understanding a lesson from lecturers. So, the solution is asking the lecturer after class or forming study group.

Emotion- focused coping -change the effect of stressor by changing the emotional reaction to the stressor. -Example: watching humor video Relationship- focused coping -to maintain and protect social relationships in response to stress. -Example: people caring for Alzheimer`s patients will support and compromise to the patient.

SOURCES OF STRESS
Disruption in social relationships. Workload. Good changes event. Loneliness.

HOW TO MANAGE STRESS??

Find causes to laugh.

Take a break.

Breathe deeply.

Visiting counseling centre for advice.

Discuss your problem with a friend or family.

* EFFECT

OF STRESS ON OUR HEALTH

A fast heartbeat. A headache. A stiff neck and/or tight shoulders. Back pain. Fast breathing.

Sweating, and sweaty palms.

Sick more often, and if you have chronic illness such as AIDS, stress can make you symptoms worse.

High blood pressure, abnormal heartbeat(arrhythmia), blood clots and hardening of the arteries.
It also linked to coronary artery diseases, heart attack, and heart failure.

* Immune

system

Constant tension from stress can lead to neck, shoulder, and low back pain.

Stomach, if you have stomach problem, such as gastroesophageal reflux diseases(GERD), peptic ulcer diseases, or irritable bowel syndrome, stress can make you syndrome worse.

* MUSCLES

Stress is linked to low fertility, erection problem, problem during pregnancy and painful menstrual periods. Lungs, stress can make symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) worse. Skin. Skin problems such as acne is made worse by stress.

Feel cranky and unable to deal with even small problems.

Feel frustrated, lose your temper more often, and yell at others for no reason.
Feel jumpy or tired all the time.

Find it hard to focus on tasks.


Worry too much about small things. Feel that you are missing out on things because you can't act quickly. Imagine that bad things are happening or about to happen.

Your personality. What you have learned from your family about responding to stress.

How you think about and handle stress.

DISCUSSION
Stress is not a rare experience but something that all people experience in varying degrees every day. Humor is the best and great stress reliever. It is easy to manage our stress if we know the proper way to manage it. Be optimist in everything that we think and do.

CONCLUSION..
MANAGING STRESS IS VERY IMPORTANT. STRESS THAT IS CANNOT BE MANAGE PROPERLY WILL GIVE A BAD EFFECTS TOWARDS OUR HEALTH. STRESS IS SOMETHING THAT CANNOT BE AVOID BUT SOMETHING THAT IS MUST TO BE MANAGE.
