WEATHERING OF ROCKS

HOME

WEATHERING
IS THE BREAKING DOWN OF ROCKS INTO FRAGMENTS. Weathering of Rocks happen as a result of (1) Mechanical action of water and wind (2) Chemical action of substances when they combine (3) Some activities of people and animals

WEATHERING
Physical weathering is caused by physical
interactions. Sand blown by the wind scouring a surface, or water causing swelling of underlying structure or weakening a material (or shattering and cracking due to water within something freezing and thus expanding), etc.

Chemical weathering is caused by chemical reaction

with the surface. For example, acid rain eroding the surface of a marble statue, or oxygen in the air causing oxidation of the surface layers of a painting, or the ultraviolet of sunlight breaking down the chemical pigments of paint.

HOW WATER WEATHERS ROCKS

Running water moves rock. As rocks move, they bump into each other. MECHANICAL WEATHERING- rocks that break physically. Rain and water can soak into rocks and dissolved some minerals ROCK BREAKS EASILY THROUGH WATER

Palawan, a province in the Philippines, has some of the most spectacular cave system on Earth. In some of its caves, there are HOME waterfalls on limestone.

HOW WIND WEATHERS ROCKS

Strong winds pick up particles of dust and sand as they blow. Particles scratch the surface of rocks. Rocks weathered by wind change shapes.

How do you think plants weather rocks?

HOME

HOW PLANTS WEATHERS ROCKS

HOME

Plants weather rocks mechanically when the roots widen cracks. As the cracks become wider and deeper, they weaken the rocks and cause them to break. LICHENS- tiny growth of plants into rocks. Lichen produces acids which cause the rock to decompose.

HOME

HOW ANIMALS WEATHER ROCKS

Are you aware that when animals build their homes in the ground, they are carving places where weathering can happen. Earthworms, ants, rabbits, and other burrowing animals dig holes.
Air and water passes through these holes and reach bedrock.

EROSION- means transporting sediment or soil from one place to another, where it is dropped or deposited. WEATHERING- is the breaking down of rock into fragments. One of the beneficial effects of weathering of rocks is the formation of soil.
