Vocabulary - Word of the Week:

Eloquent

Eloquent is an adjective, which means that it describes nouns.

Meaning: If say that a speech was eloquent, it means that it was a very moving and forceful speech with clear and effective language. Ex: Barack Obama is a very eloquent orator. (Orator is a public
speaker, and eloquent orator means that he is a very moving and forceful public speaker.)

Ex: He gave an eloquent speech. (means he gave a moving and forceful


speech)

Eloquently is an adverb. It describes the way in which a person speaks. Ex: He spoke eloquently on the need to remove poverty. (means he
spoke in a moving and forceful way)

Phrasal Verb of the Week

Live Up

1.

Live up to something means to be as good as what was expected or promised. Ex: The natural beauty of Kashmir lived up to our expectations.
(means it was as good as what we had expected)

Ex: Politicians make many promises before elections but they never live up to those promises after elections. (means they never
perform/do as promised)

2.

Live it up is another phrasal verb and it means to have an exciting and enjoyable time with parties, good food and drink. (in Hindi: Aish karna) Ex: After getting a high-paying job, I lived it up for a year before I started thinking of saving money. (means I enjoyed a lot by going out for
parties, dancing, eating and drinking etc)

Ex: After retiring he is living it up in Goa. (means he is enjoying life by


partying, drinking and doing other exciting things.)

Common Spoken English Errors

What is the mistake: 1. They offered me a job, but I denied it. 2. I wanted to marry my boyfriend but my parents denied it. Deny means to say that a claim/accusation (aarop) is not true. In both these sentences, deny is not the right word to use. It doesnt mean mana karna Corrections: 1. They offered me a job but I refused it. (for offers, use
refuse when you want to say no to it)

2. I wanted to marry to boyfriend but my parents forbade it. (when you want to say that someone in authority did not allow
you to do something, use forbid forbade is second form)

Idioms/Saying of the Week


1. 2. The be-all and end-all This is a phrase which means the most important and central thing. This is normally used in negative sentences. Ex: Winning is not the be-all and end-all of sports. (means winning is not
the most important and central thing in sports)

Ex: Profit is the be-all and end-all of business. (means making profits is the
main and most important part of a business)

The be-all and end-all of someones existence is another way of using this phrase and we use it when we say that this is the central and most important thing in someones life.

Ex: My mother is the be-all and end-all of my existence. (means my mother is the central & most important part of my life)
Ex: Work is the be-all and end-all of his existence. (means work is the central & most important part of his life)
