NFC LINKING

NFC HISTORY 1983 The first patent to be associated RFID was granted to Charles Walton. 2004 Nokia, Philips and Sony established the NFC Forum 2006 Initial specifications for NFC Tags 2006 Specification for "Smart Poster" records 2006 Nokia 6131 was the first NFC phone 2009 In January, NFC Forum released Peer-to-Peer standards

2010 Samsung Nexus S: First Android NFC phone 2011 NFC support becomes part of the Symbian mobile operating system 2012 Sony introduces the "Smart Tags"

NFC TECHNOLOGY Technical principle Data transfer via EM radio waves Power receive by magnetic radiation RFID Tag Contain antenna & IC In 2004 NFC FORUM Founded Modes of operations Reader/writer mode Peer to peer mode Card emulation mode

A customary passive RFID tag that is compatible with NFC. A small microchip is surrounded by a copper antenna. The shown tag has a side length of around five centimeters

NFC DATA EXCHANGE FORMAT(NDEF)

Message is used to transfer data Message contain One or more NDEF records

NFC Record Types Definitions(RTD)

Text record type Uniform resource identifier(URI) type Signature record type Smart poster record type

The Android Beam features is included in Androids newest version Ice Cream Sandwich and allows data transfer between two NFCcapable smartphones. The figure shows two Samsung Galaxy Nexus phones exchanging a map location.

Hardware architecture of NFC capable phones

Host controller
Executing mobile operator system Manages UI Manages GSM/UTMS modem Gate way of other NFC components to phone itself

NFC antenna
Receiving & transmitting radio signals

NFC Controller
Modulates ,demodulates & processes the signals

Secure Element(SE)
Protect from manipulates & misuse Dedicated chip, which fix on a part of phone UICC is used as SE

Connection handover
Provide connection Handover to BT & Wi-Fi Not compactable for large distance &high speed

Comparison to similar technologies BT technology Wi-Fi technology

Both are not able communicate with passive tags

Applications
Mobile payment
Waving the phone over the reader Person to person money transfer Google wallet Presented in may2011 & launched sep.2011 Also provide virtual Google prepaid card

The Wallet application is available for Android OS and compatible with MasterCards Pay Pass NFC readers at shop checkouts.

Sensitive data is stored on a dedicated Secure Element within the phone. Before making a purchase, a PIN must be entered to access the data.

Mobile Ticketing
Public transports Entering to specific function area Oyster card

SIM pass technology

Developed by Watch data system Ltd Only available Chinese market External NFC antenna used Special RFID-SIM placed in SIM slot

Smart poster

NFC Tag attach with poster QR code

Data Transfer
Tapping two active devices Transfer map, contact& images, etc NFC enabled headsets

NFC Enabled smart posters

Smart poster NFC enabled headset

ADVANTAGES Can connect to Passive devices Less power consumption Small set-up time
