The Co-op Family Constitution

Read the Constitution and annotate it:

Annotate means to write stuff on it to keep you focused on making meaning of what you read. Try these annotations: Put a check mark beside sections you understand Put a question mark beside sections you dont understand Put a happy face beside sections you really like Put a frowny face beside sections you dont like Once youre done annotating: Turn to your partner from yesterday clear up any confusions you many have and discuss your happy and sad faces When youre done talking about the constitution, hi-five your partner and say Thank you for helping me learn. Continue your conversation from yesterday getting to know each other until the rest of the class is finished.

In the words of former Co-op students

This experience has been an absolutely extraordinary one, full of all sorts of valuable lessons, experiences and most importantly, fun. I've learned much more about the world around me, and not in some perfunctory, memorize-this-and-that, or ace-the-test way, but in a genuinely interested and engaged way(at least for the most part). Elvis Nguyen Co-op 2011

Co-op reignited the thirst I have for knowledge, and I constantly catch myself google-searching and wikipediaing everything and anything, just to gain a better understanding. This habit is one that I am really excited about, because in a way it reminds me how important school is to me. 2011 Co-op student

For the first time in ten years, I wanted to go to school. I was excited to learn, and I learned so much. Courtney Mardones Co-op 2011

Coop has been such an amazing experience and has changed me into a better person. It has taught me ways to overcome my distracted mind and enjoy school. Coop has changed my life. Chelsea Vanranden Co-op 2011

I can honestly say I hated school before coop, it has changed my life. Before this semester I dreaded getting up and going to school because it was so so so boring and I hated learning. I had no idea that it was not the material that was the problem but it was actually myself. Once I engaged myself in what was being taught I genuinely enjoyed learning, I almost craved it. It took me so long to get to that point of loving learning and then after spring break it all fell apart and I drifted back into my old habits but I still remember how it felt. I have confidence that next I will be able to get back and engage myself and I will once again enjoy learning.

Just knowing what Im aiming for makes me feel relieved inside. Co-op
student

For the first time in my life Im really interested in going to college and becoming something. Chris Biggar Co-op student

Co-op has been an amazing experience for me. My work experiences were awesome and I am so thankful for the opportunities I was given. The information we learned in class actually seemed relevant to life.
Nicole VanDeursen Co-op student.

Co-op gave me a lot more confidence and helped me understand others better so I can be better at being me.

I am more confident and openI believe I have grown as a student and a person in real life. Jake Booth Co-op 2012 I learned a bit more about myself, what I might like as a career, how to be selfregulated, and think critically, I learned how to learn and I learned more about love. Kevin Kwon Co-op 2012

I learned that the working world is not easy and that adults are not lying when they say its a good idea to stay in school. Alex Ferguson Co-op 2012

I learned how to communicate with people on my own and to step out of my safe-zone. Taylor Nguyen Co-op 2012 Ive learned to lessen my hate towards English and even enjoying it from time to time Im currently reading for fun, which was a goal I never thought I could achieve. Kim Bautista Co-op 2012

This class has left me with increased confidence and growing creativity. It has also made me more conscious of my surroundings. Lilly Truong Co-op 2012
I have learned so much more that just school subjects; this was a chance for me to really realize all that I could be with the support of great people around me. Marisah Hildebrandt Co-op 2012

Ive learned to think beyond the boundaries that have been erected over the course of my high school experience and its amazingTo be pithy about it, my time in co-op has been amazing. Its unlike anything Ive ever felt in high school: the sense of true learning, support, family and closeness is just so overwhelming. Hannah Rosalejos, Co-op 2012

Using your Red Yellow Green Cards How well do you know the person next to you?

know him/her not at all or barely

know him/ her a little know him/ her well

The person next to you is your partner for now

Even if you know this person a little, I want you to start with them from scratch, as if it was the first time youve ever met them. Throw out everything you think you know about this person. Assume only the best in them. Assume that theres a human being inside them that wants to connect with others. Assume that this human being is doing the best he/ she can and is just trying to make find his/ her place in the world.

The Great Divide

Years ago I traveled to Spain with a friend. We went to the Prado. We got there late and after an hour or so the guard reminded us that the museum would soon be closing. I was sorry since my companions greater interest in art was helping me enjoy the museum experience more than usual. But I was unprepared for her reaction. I could tell that our required departure was creating genuine pain. She was experiencing something I didnt get. The only way to relieve her discomfort was to assure her wed go back first thing in the morning. It means that much to you? I asked. She was as surprised by my lack of feeling as I was by the power of hers. We stood, the two us, on different sides of a divide that I know no way to cross. I had never known a painting in a the way she did. But for the first time in my life I recognized, and envied, what art could mean for others.

What are some things were on opposite sides of a divide of?

You dont know what you dont know.

The more you know the more you realize that you dont know.
