OR is the application of scientific methods, techniques and tools to problems in the system to control the operations with optimal solutions to problems.

OR is an interdisciplinary science which deploys scientific methods like mathematical modeling, statistics and algorithms to arrive at optimal decisions in complex real world problems.

Define the problem of research and gather the relevant data. Formulate a mathematical model to represent the problem. Develop a computer-based procedure for deriving solutions to the problem from the model.

Test the model and refine it as needed. Prepare for the ongoing application of the model as prescribed by management. Implementation.
