THE ROLE OF GOVERNMENT AND NON-GOVERNMENT ORGANISATIONS IN PROMOTING ADHERENCE TO THE NATIONAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY GUIDELINES IN SCHOOLS, WORKPLACE

AND COMMUNITIES, INCLUDING VICHEALTH, NATIONAL HEART FOUNDATION, STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS.

Non-government organisations
NGOs play a major role in promoting health at the federal, state and local level. Some examples of NGO programs are: Heart Foundation Diabetes Australia Cancer Council of Australia

Heart Foundation
Mission To have the best cardiovascular health in the world, and to reduce suffering and death from heart, stroke, and blood vessel disease. There goals are achieved by: Supporting and informing people of risk factors and minimising the risk Promoting 30mins of moderate activity a day and provides advice on starting walking groups in the local community. to have the best cardiovascular health in the world by reducing the suffering and death from heart, stroke and blood vessels diseases in Australia.

Heart Foundation
Goals of NHF cont 1. Working with all levels of governments, (federal, state and local) other health organisations, the media and community groups to increase awareness and implement policies and programs to improve CV health of Australians 2. Provides advice for exercise programs and where to find suitable programs. 3. Jump rope for heart is a NHF initiative to promote PA in children.

Diabetes Australia
Aims to inform the public about diabetes and preventative measures and to inform those who have diabetes how to best manage their diabetes. They promote the following: Maintaining a healthy weight Performing regular PA Making healthy food choices Managing BP Managing cholesterol Not smoking

They recommend 30mins of PA everyday which can be done in 3 x 10min sessions, which are in keeping with the NPAGs. Cancer council promotes regular physical activity
