Overuse

of

Common Property Resources

What is Common Property Resource?

Common property resources are those with open access.
Ownership of these resources is either not defined or, by common
practice, is not exercised; hence, individuals are free to use a common property resource as they wish.

Overuse of common property resources, a principle also known as tragedy of the commons, is another
example of a social factor that leads to

environmental degradation.

This is based on the

greed mentality of using or

getting the available resources for the reasons of If

I dont use or get this resource, someone else will and The little bit I use or pollute is not enough to matter.

Examples of Common Property Resources

Air

Fisheries

Wildlife

Forests

When does the Overuse of Common Property Resources happens?

It occurs when there is no control ( or inadequate control) over shared resources. When exploitation becomes free for all and individual profit is the only motive. Uncontrolled human population growth leading to overpopulation.

Sample process of overusing common property resources

1. Irrigation(Watering crops) 2. Food supplies (fishing) 3. Transportation of food Overused when... Diseases Unsightly view of the river Bad smell Limits availability for use. Death of the river.

Can lead to...

Used for: 1. Household waste disposal 2. Agriculture and industrial waste disposal 3. Overfishing

Forest

Extinction of wild animals and other biodiversity Floods and soil erosion Deforestation Limits availability for use. Migration of animals to another place.

1. Stabilizes the climate in general. 2. Provides perfect habitats for life to flourish on land. 3. Provides the biggest genes reservoir. 4. Serves as the basket of food for human. 5. Provide human with a huge amount of different medicine material Overused when...

Can lead to...

1. Humans kill most of the biodiversity in the area. 2. Cutting of forest trees excessively. 3. Expansion of land for individual use.

Global Scenario of Common Property Resource Overuse

Convenient

Modern Lifestyle

The

lifestyles are also linked with consumption.

The modern society is termed consumer society because the level of consumption of various resources, goods and services has gone substantially up in modern times. This is further increasing with the increase in

development and rising income levels.

Convenient modern lifestyles and the throwaway society concept are becoming
so common in urban centers and even in progressive provinces.

Will you be bringing this?

When you can actually have this?

or

Modern Lifestyle affects the environment when...

Humans destroy cultivable lands to build infrastructures. Humans overuse the burning of fossil fuel. Humans overuse plastics.

The use of instant coffee, noodles, diapers, excessive use of styrofoams, and other disposables, the bloom of fastfood stores, and other modern conveniences, are degrading the

environment because of the air, soil, and water pollution that result.

Tragedy of Plastics

''The

lifestyle

is

detrimental to other life forms in

the ecosystem. There is a great need to effect a change in the stance towards

environment and life style as well.''
