PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL ON NURSING PROCEDURE OF BSN III STUDENTS IN SKILLS LABORATORY AND CLINICAL PERFORMANCE

What is Skills Laboratory and Clinical Performance?

Skills Laboratory

Refers to one of the nursing subjects which focuses more on the techniques employed to the nursing procedures in preparing the students for actual situation.

Clinical Performance

refers to the act or process of carrying out procedures in the hospital setting.

SUMMARY
This study is about the performance appraisal on nursing procedure of BSN III students in skills laboratory and clinical performance. It covers to assess the performance of the students who are enrolled in skills laboratory subject while having its Related Learning Experiences in the clinical area. The application of nursing procedure of BSN III students in the skills laboratory and clinical area was determined in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude. This study used a descriptive-comparative method of research on which a questionnaire was distributed, collected, recorded, and analyzed to determine the application of nursing procedure in the skills laboratory and clinical area among BSN III students. A total of 68 respondents were taken for this study, the researchers used purposive sampling technique to come up with the total number of respondents.

This study aimed to determine the performance appraisal on nursing procedure of BSN III students in Olivarez College Paranaque in the skills laboratory and clinical performance Specifically, the researchers were able to answer the following questions:

Findings
Based on the data gathered, the following findings were obtained:

1. Application of nursing procedure in the Skills laboratory in terms of:


1.1 Knowledge; 1.2 Skill; and 1.3 Attitude?

1.1 The mean distribution of the respondents according to knowledge in skills laboratory
reveals that the respondents are familiarized with the equipment and supplies used in the skills laboratory as shown in their mean value of 4.36 interpreted as frequent. It was followed by the identification of nursing consideration of each nursing procedure which got a mean value of 4.32 interpreted as frequent. It was followed by knowing the objective of each nursing procedure that has a mean of 4.26 interpreted as frequent. Next was collaborates effectively with others in matter pertaining to care of client which got a mean of 4.22 and interpreted as frequent. Knowing the rationale of each nursing procedure which got a mean value of 4.07, interpreted as frequent.

1.2 The mean distribution of the respondents according to skills in skills laboratory
respondents perform hand washing before and after every procedure as shown in their mean value of 4.51 interpreted as always. followed by explaining the procedure to client which got a mean value of 4.47 and interpreted as frequent Performs nursing procedures correctly and systematically has a mean of 4.28 and interpreted as frequent. plans, implement, evaluate and documents nursing care got a mean of 4.26 and interpreted as frequent. assess clinical manifestation through use of various techniques got the mean of 4.17 and interpreted as frequent.

1.3 the mean distribution of the respondents according to attitude in skills laboratory
the respondents appear well-groomed and sustains good poise as shown in their mean value of 4.72 and interpreted as always. Respects the rights and privacy of patient and others, with a mean value of 4.58 and interpreted as always. Punctual and uses time effectively has a mean of 4.47 interpreted as frequent. Reporting in complete prescribed uniform and paraphernalia which got a mean value of 4.40 and interpreted as frequent. Accepts suggestions and criticism graciously, and shows effort to overcome shortcomings and liabilities which got a mean value of 4.33 interpreted as frequent.

The respondents are familiarize with the equipment and supplies used in the skills laboratory as shown in their mean value of 4.43 interpreted as frequent. Identification of nursing consideration of each nursing procedure which got a mean value of 4.29 interpreted as frequent Collaborates effectively with others in matter pertaining to care of client who got a mean of 4.32 Knows the objective of each nursing procedure and Identifies nursing consideration of each nursing procedure which got a mean value of 4.29 interpreted as frequent. knows the rationale of each nursing procedure which got a mean of 4.22.

2.2 The mean distribution of the respondents according to Skills in clinical area
the respondents perform hand washing before and after every procedure as shown in their mean value of 4.64 interpreted as always. Performs nursing procedures correctly and systematically which got a mean of 4.38. Explain procedure to client which got a mean value of 4.36 interpreted as frequent. Plans, implement, evaluate and documents nursing care which got a mean of 4.43 interpreted as frequent. Assess clinical manifestations through the different methods used such as inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation and got a mean of 4.29 interpreted as frequent.

Respondents appears well-groomed and sustains good poise as shown in their mean value of 4.72 interpreted as always. Respects the rights and privacy of patient and others, which got a mean value of 4.64 interpreted as always. Punctual and uses time effectively has a mean value of 4.46 interpreted as frequent. reports in complete prescribed uniform and paraphernalia which got a mean value of 4.39 and interpreted as frequent. Accepts suggestions and criticism graciously, and shows effort to overcome shortcomings and liabilities which got a mean value of 4.39 also and interpreted as frequent.

Based on the data gathered, the following findings were obtained:

3. Is there a difference between how BSN III students during application of nursing procedure conducted in skills laboratory and clinical area?

It shows that there is no significant difference on the application of nursing procedure in the skills laboratory and in the clinical area as shown in the z calculated value of 0.6057 which is less than the critical value of z which is 1.96.

Conclusion
Based on the results and findings of the study, the null hypothesis testifies that there is no significant difference between the performance on nursing procedure of skills laboratory and clinical performance of BSN III students in Olivarez College Paraaque. The result also shows that respondents acquired the highest level result in the application of nursing procedure in skills laboratory and clinical area in terms of attitude in the other hand respondents got the least result in the application of nursing procedure in the skills laboratory and clinical area in terms of knowledge.

Conclusion
As specified, respondents got the least result in terms of knowledge in the application of nursing procedure in the skills laboratory and clinical area is the ability to know the rationale of each nursing procedure. Respondents got the least result in terms of skills in the application of nursing procedure in the skills laboratory and clinical area is the ability to assess clinical manifestation through use of various methods. While in terms of attitude, respondents got the least result in the application of nursing procedure in the skills laboratory and clinical area is the ability to Accept suggestions and criticism graciously, and shows effort to overcome shortcomings and liabilities.

Recommendations
Students should take consider those factors that they got the least results in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude in the application of nursing procedure in the skills laboratory and clinical area and they should intensify and struggle towards achievement of their weakness in the application of nursing procedure. School administration should take a great concentration on the skills laboratory that is should be given more emphasis because it is where knowledge, skills and attitude are developed, which a student can put into actual practice in the different clinical settings to answer the needs of their clients.

Recommendations
Clinical instructors should continue in molding the skills, knowledge and attitude of the students towards application of the nursing procedure most importantly the weakest ability in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude towards application of nursing procedure in the skills laboratory and clinical area. Future researchers should take consideration to include terms such as the faculty, instruction and facilities in evaluating application of nursing procedure in the skills laboratory and clinical area that mainly affects the performance and application of nursing procedures of the nursing students.

As indicated in the result of this study, there is still a room for improvement in the ability of application of nursing procedure in the skills laboratory and clinical area. Despite the fact that the application of nursing procedure in terms of knowledge, skill and attitude got overall good rating, it is still difficult to discount the fact that there are significant number of respondents who gave a poor rating in some category. Hence, the researchers propose the following:
