WATERPROOFING
DEFINITION Various types of waterproofing materials are used in modern tunnel construction. Solid waterproofing is made of waterproof building organic or synthetic film filter materials, synthetic resinous materials, and steel sheets. May be partial as with umbrella waterproofing. Example for a tunnel roof , in which case it is not exposed to hydrostatic pressure. The function to enhance safety and function as well as increase useful life of these structures. protect important structures against corrosion. It reduces maintenance costs and repairs.

The waterproofing of a tunnel consists of -A support - A protective geotextile - A waterproofing fabric membrane

FUNCTION OF THE GEOTEXTILE MEMBRANE

PVC MEMBRANE
The PVC waterproofing membrane is to be made of specially plasticized polyvinyl chloride. The material is to be supplied in accordance to the attached specification sheet. http://www.protexttunnel.com/albu m_tunnelling.php
The main function of PVC membrane in tunnel waterproofing project is to protect the tunnel from moisture, and to avoid its structure from being infiltrated and eroded by groundwater in order to prolong the tunnels life. http://www.wiskoamerica.com/pvcspecifications.htm

PVC membrane is composed of several layers of adhesives of different chemical and physical properties, with a pre-warning top layer http://www.wiskoamerica.com/pvcspecifications.htm

WATERTIGHT CONCRETE/WATERSTOPS
Internal Waterstop 3 TYPES OF WATERSTOPS External Waterstop

Closing/Sealing Waterstop

Mounted on the wet side of a concrete structure

The primary seal between two concrete structures Applied at the dry side of the structure

Has a central sponge at its centre. The purpose of this central section is to form a free space in the concrete, which is necessary to allow movement

Protects the joint against ingress of mud or any other substance

Prevents the ingress of water and dirt into the joint

The ease of fitting into the shuttering and less expensive

Only recommended in open structures such as tunnel roofs where air can be trapped within the joint

EXAMPLE OF WATERTIGHT

Omega seals

Application of an omega seal in a bored tunnel. Heinke Tunnel Segment Gaskets

The TSGs, which are located in precast grooves encircling the mating faces of each segment, give a secure rubber-to-rubber waterproof seal as soon as the segments are bolted together

The Omega seal allows joint movement in combination with water pressure. Applications encompass the connection between a bored tunnel and the entrance to a structure such as a rail station

STRUCTURAL WATERPROFFING SYSTEM

1. STEEL ARCHES( SLIDING SYSTEM) = STEEL LINING SYSTEM

TYPICAL SUPPORT ELEMENTS 2. CONCRETE LINING

i. REINFORCEMENT CONCRETE LINING

ii. PRECAST CONCRETE LINING 1. Installation without using tunnel boring machine

Gantry acts as the working platform to install formwork and move forward gradually as it completed.

2. Installation using tunnel boring machine

BENEFIT
High resistance to aging and to excellent elongation and tensile characteristics. Special maintenance due to untimely deterioration of the structure The proper operation of electrical, lighting, and ventilating systems contained within the structure

The long-term effects of water incursion

Increase of safety

Routine maintenance work to be performed with greater security
