DEFINATION OF LYOPHILIC SOLUTION

Characterized by strong attraction between the colloid medium and the dispersion medium of a colloidal system. The disperse phase is relatively liquid, usually comprising highly complex organic substances such as starch, which readily absorb solvent, swell, and distribute uniformly through the medium.

DEFINATION OF LYOPHOBIC SOLUTION

An

unstable colloid system in which the disperse phase particles tend to repel liquids, are easily precipitated, and cannot be redispersed with additional solvent.

PROPERTIES OF LYOPHILIC SOLUTION

DEFINITION
Lyophilic colloids are liquid loving colloids Lyo means solvent and philic means loving.

EXAMPLES

Sols of organic substances like gelatin, gum, starch and proteins.

Easy to prepare. It can be prepared directly by mixing colloid with liquid. Additional stabilizers are not required during their preparation.

EASE OF PREPARATION

STABILITY

It relatively stable as strong forces of interaction exist between colloidal particles and liquid.

CHARGE

It depends upon pH. It can be negative, positive or neutral.

VISCOSITY

It higher viscosity than that of the medium.

REVERSIBILITY

It reversibility. This is because on evaporating the liquid, the residue left will passes into colloidal state on addition of liquid. It is less than that of dispersion medium. It depend on the nature of charge these particles may migrate to cathode or anode or may not move at all.

SURFACE TENSION

ELECTROPHORESIS

PROPERTIES OF LYOPHOBIC SOLUTION

Lyophobic colloids are liquid hating colloids. Lyo means solvent and phobic means hating.

DEFINITION

EXAMPLES

Sols of inorganic substances like Arsenic (As2S3), Iron (Fe(OH)3) and Platinum. It easy to prepare. It cannot be be prepared directly by mixing colloid with liquid. Special methods are employed to prepare lyophobic sols and additional stabilizers are required during their preparation.

EASE OF PREPARATION

STABILITY

It less stable as weak forces of interaction exist between colloidal particles and liquid.

It can be positive or negative

CHARGE

As2S3 sol is negative in nature while Fe(OH)3 sol is positive in nature.

It have almost same viscosity as that of medium.

VISCOSITY

It is irreversible
REVERSIBILITY

This is because on evaporating the liquid, the residue left cannot be converted into solution on mere addition of liquid The surface tension is nearly same as that of dispersion medium.

Surface Tension

It depend on the nature of charge these particles ELECTROPHORE migrate to either cathode or anode.
