Why removal of phosphate?

Eutrophication Techniques to remove phosphate

Adsorption: The accumulation of gases, liquids, or solutes on the surface of a solid or liquid. Adsorbate: The material being concentrated or adsorbed. Adsorbent : The absorbing phase. Why Adsorption? Types of Adsorption

Title of the paper Year and author Study on the phosphate removal from aqueous solution using modified fly ash 2. Removal of phosphate from Wastewater Using Fe-Mn binary oxide adsorbent Xu et al(2010)

Abstract Modified flyash and its adsorption capacity

Remarks Removal was done by precipitation more instead of adsorption The data were well fit by the Freundlich isotherm model and the process is chemisorption.

Zhang et al (2009)

The adsorption data are correlated with both Langmuir and Freundlich models.

To investigate the efficiency of low cost selected adsorbents for the removal of phosphate from wastewater. To investigate the effects of contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial concentration and pH on phosphate removal efficiency. To quantify the adsorption equilibrium through Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. To investigate the adsorption mechanisms through kinetic models.

Adsorbents used: 1. Fly ash 2. Coconut coir pith 3. Magnesia loaded fly ash 4. Nut grass 5. Rice husk

Equipments: 1. A UV/Vis spectrophotometer for measurement of phosphate concentration according to APHA standards. 2. Orion EA 940 expandable ion analyzer for pH measurement. 3. IHC 3280 Orbital Shaking incubator used for all adsorption experiments. 4. TC 650 S Multi-spin centrifuge.

Characterization of adsorbent : X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) Point of zero charge specific gravity Density

Preparation of Stock Solution(KH2PO4) Batch Study To find the equilibrium time, optimum dosage and optimum pH, the following studies are to be conducted: 1. Effect of contact time 2. Effect of Adsorbent dosage 3. Effect of pH

Adsorbate: phosphate concentration:11 ppm Contact time: 24 hours Dose of Adsorbent : 50 mg/50 mL
