ZigBee is the newest and provides specifications for devices that have low data rates, consume very low power and are thus characterized by long battery life. Other standards like Bluetooth and IrDA address high data rate applications such as voice, video and LAN communications.

Zigbee
Beacon
NonBeacon
Beacon mode
Beacon mode is a fully coordinated mode in that all the device know when to coordinate with one another. In this mode, the network coordinator will periodically "wake-up" and send out a beacon to the devices within its network.
Non-beacon mode
Non-beacon mode, on the other hand, is less coordinated, as any device can communicate with the coordinator at will. In any case, ZigBee obtains its overall low power consumption because the majority of network devices are able to remain inactive over long periods of time.
History Of ZigBee
October 2002 ZigBee Alliance is formed December 2004 ZigBee 1.0 is released Current releases 802.15.4 is 2006 ZigBee specification is 2007
Reliable and self healing. Supports large number of nodes. Easy to deploy. Very long battery life. Secure. Long life. Can be used globally
ZigBee basically uses digital radios to allow devices to communicate with one another. A typical ZigBee network consists of several types of devices. A network coordinator is a device that sets up the network with the help of rputers it transfers the data
Zigbee vs Bluetooth
Lower Data Rate 1Mbps vs. 250kbps Lower Energy Multi-years. multi-day battery life Device numbers 7 slaves per network vs. 65,000 nodes
Features of ZigBee
Low power consumption High density of nodes per network Simple protocol, global implementation Network Flexibility License free operation in 2.4 GHz band Small size-less than 9 mm*9 mm Hundreds of devices per Network
[10]
Could be developed on small cheap microprocessor. Optimized for low cost in large scale production. Shows tight engineering constraints against esoteric problems
Advantages
Better than Infra-Red, Bluetooth andother wireless technology. Enables reliable wireless network.
Conclusion
ZigBee's current focus is to define a general-purpose, inexpensive, self- organizing, mesh network that can be used for industrial control, embedded sensing, medical data collection, smoke and intruder warning, building automation, home automation , etc.
