AN IMPACT OF VARIATIONS IN SMILE ARC AND BUCCAL CORRIDORS ON SMILE ESTHETICS

DR.M.SAOOD PGR(ORTHODONTI CS) SBDC,PESHAWAR

INTRODUCTION

Smile esthetics is considered fundamental to facial beauty Modern orthodontics requires a harmonious balance between soft tissues and occlusion Individuals usually focus on peoples eyes and mouths during interpersonal interaction, with little time spent on other facial features. In the mind of the general public, the smile ranks second only to the eyes as the most important feature in facial attractiveness ( Goldstein, 1969 ).

OBJECTIVE
To

determine the impact of smile arc and Buccal corridor on smile attractiveness
compare the way orthodontists , general dentists and laypersons perceive smile arc and Buccal Corridors.

OPERATIONAL OBJECTIVE

Using visual analogue scale (VAS) i.e 0mm to 100mm for rating buccal corridor and smile arc from less attractive to more attractive.

OPERATIONAL DEFINITION
Smile arc:

The relationship of the incisor edges of maxillary incisors and canine tips with the curvature of lower lip In ideal smile arc, the incisor edges are parallel with the curvature of lower lip

Buccal corridors:

Space between the buccal surfaces of the maxillary teeth and the corners of the mouth during a smile

In a study by Frush and Fischer, presence of buccal corridors added the illusion of natural dentition
In present time, most of the persons prefer faces with minimal buccal corridor spaces.

Knowledge of the influence of orthodontic treatment on smile attractiveness is very important. Many orthodontic procedures can alter patient smile by alteration of buccal corridors and smile arc.

Maxillary expansion Fixed appliance therapy Lefort I osteotomy

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Setting Orthodontic Department, Sardar Begum Dental College, Gandhara University, Peshawar, KPK. Duration of Study Minimum of 6 months after approval of synopsis Sample size 200 cases Study design, Cross-sectional comparative study

PROCEDURE

Ethical approval for the present investigation will be obtained from Ethical Committee, Gandhara University , Peshawar This study will be based on closeup smiling photograph of female exhibiting posed smile with no obvious facial or dental defects Smile arc and buccal corridors will be altered using Adobe Photoshop version CS5 (Adobe Systems, San Jose, California, USA) Buccal Corridors will be expressed as a ratio: Visible maxillary dentition width/oral aperture width

Six different sizes of Buccal Corridors will be created

Extra- broad ( 0%) Broad (5%) Medium broad (10%) Medium ( 15%) Medium narrow ( 20%) Narrow (25%)

Six images were arranged in the order of the amount of buccal corridor spaces and were displayed on A-4 size paper

the curvature of the incisal edges will be modified with adobe photoshop version CS5 to fit 5 curves ranging from consonant to flat to reverse based on sequentially increasing parabolic arcs.

All the photos will be rated by orthodontists, General Dentists and laypersons from least to most attractive smile arcs

Photos will be numbered 15, in order of increase in curvature. Consonant Slight consonant Flat Slight reverse Exaggerated reverse

DATA ANALYSIS PROCEDURE

Descriptive statistics, including means, standard deviations, and minimum and maximum values, will be calculated using SPSS version 20 software. Inter examiner comparison will be tested using ANOVA.
