Statistics :
5th African economy by GDP 2nd most competitive economy in North Africa behind Tunisia. African Competitiveness Report 2009 Morocco was ranked the 1st African country. Economist Intelligence Unit GDP : $171 billion (2012) GDP by sector (2012) : agriculture : 17.1% industry : 31.6% services : 51.4% External export : $14.49 billion (2010)

AGRICULTURE
Land :
Achievement of self-sufficiency in food production. Production of two-thirds of the grains (wheat, barley, and corn) needed for domestic consumption. Production of commercial crops (cotton, sugarcane, sugar beets, and sunflowers). Exportation of citrus fruits and early vegetables to the European market. Development of its irrigation potential (that ultimately will irrigate more than 1 million hectares).

AGRICULTURE
Drought :
Cereals constitute the essential of the agricultural value added. Their production is very sensitive to rain falls. Cereal yields determine the economic growth in general.

Cannabis :
Morocco is ranked among the world's largest producers and exporters of cannabis. Its cultivation and sale provide the economic base for much of northern Morocco. At about 1340 km in Morocco's five northern provinces.

AGRICULTURE
Fishing :
The Kingdom is considered the largest fish market in Africa. Total catch of 1,084,638 MT in 2001.

INDUSTRY
Manufacturing :
Production of light consumer goods (foodstuffs, beverages, textiles, and metal and leather products). Heavy industry : petroleum refining, chemical fertilizers, automobile and tractor assembly, foundry work, asphalt, and cement. Exportation of canned fish and fruit, wine, leather goods, and textiles and handicrafts (carpets and brass, copper, silver, and wood implements).

INDUSTRY
Mining :
Including MAD 2.17 billion in exports. 20% of energy consumption. Employment of 39,000 people with an estimated MAD 571 million in salaries. Production of minerals and metals (phosphates, silver , ).

SERVICES
Tourism :
Major contributor to both the economic output and the current account balance. Main job provider. 8 million tourists in 2007. CAP 2009: a plan to better promote Morocco globally as a tourism destination. Plan Azur : creating six coastal resorts for holidayhome owners and tourists, upgrading regional airports to attract budget airlines, and building new train and road links.

SERVICES
Information Technology :
The IT sector generated a turnover of Dh7 billion ($910,000m) in 2007. The 2005 Plan Emergence resulted in the reaction of Casanearshore and Rabat Technopolis offshoring centers. A low penetration rate (21%) presents a challenge for the development of e-commerce.

SERVICES
Retail :
It represents 12.8% of Morocco's GDP and 1.2m people. Shoppers rely on the country's 1151 souks, markets and approximately 700,000 independent groceries and shops. Increasing purchasing power and the growing number of tourists boost the development of malls and luxury shopping.

Construction Sector :
Increasing public investment in ports. Increasing housing development projects. Increasing roads. Creating many opportunities for public-private partnerships.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Science and technology in Morocco has significantly developed in recent years. The Moroccan government has been implementing reforms to encourage scientific research in the Kingdom. However, the greatest gap at that point of time lied in the link between research and innovation. The University of Al-Karaouine is considered the oldest continuously operating academic degree-granting university in the world, by the Guinness Book of Records.

COMMUNICATIONS
While the Moroccan telecoms market remains under-saturated, its three mobile operators have experienced robust growth in recent years, both at home and abroad.
The internet is available but expensive. The principal switching centers are Casablanca and Rabat.

COMMUNICATIONS
Telecommunications sector
The telecoms sector increased in value from Dh25.6 billion ($3.3 billion) in 2006 to Dh33.3 billion ($4.2 billion) in the recent years. the sector should employ 125,000 people and contribute 10% of GDP. With the penetration rates of 69.4% from mobile phones and 8.95% for fixed lines, the Moroccan telecoms industry is set to continue to grow.

Morocco has managed to resist against the direct effects of the crisis. Nonetheless, given its openness on the global economy, Morocco felt the impact of the economic crisis on the productive sectors linked to foreign demand.

The Government has implemented a number of measures under the 2009 finance act.
