PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE & PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS

SIMPLE:
- We are interested in the outcome of the activity. e.g. I have already cleaned my room. ( My room is now tidy.) - We use it to talk about HOW MUCH, HOW MANY OR HOW MANY TIMES. e.g. She has seen that film three times. - The time for these actions is unspecified. e.g. They have been to London.

CONTINUOUS:
-The important thing is the activity. It doesnt matter whether the activity has been finished or not. e.g. I have been working in New York since 1999. -We use it to give information about HOW LONG an action has been taking place. e.g. She has been studying English for 5 years.

SIMPLE: We use it for permanent situations e.g. James has lived in Paris for 10 years. (Meaning: He is a permanent resident of this town.)

CONTINUOUS: We use it for temporary situations e.g. James has been living here for a year. (Meaning: This situation is only temporary. Maybe he is an exchange student and only here for one or two years.)

SIGNALS!
SIMPLE: We use: already, just, ever, never, yet, still e.g. He has just entered the apartment.

CONTINUOUS: We use: for, since e.g. They have been sleeping since 10 p.m.

Verbs which are not normally used in the Continuous aspect:

state: be, have (for possession only) Example: We have been on holiday for two weeks. senses: feel, hear, see, smell, taste, touch Example: He has touched the painting. brain work: believe, know, think, understand Example: I have known him for 3 years.

 Underline the appropriate tense: Robin: I think the waiter has forgotten / has been forgetting us. We have waited / have been waiting here for over half an hour and nobody has taken / has been taking our order yet. Michele: I think you're right. He has walked / has been walking by us at least twenty times. He probably thinks we have already ordered / have been already ordering. Robin: Look at that couple over there, they have only been / have only been being here for five or ten minutes and they already have their food. Michele: He must realize we havent ordered yet / havent been ordering yet! We have sat / have been sitting here for over half an hour staring at him. Robin: I don't know if he has even noticed / has even been noticing us. He has run / has been running from table to table taking orders and serving food. Michele: That's true, and he hasnt looked / hasnt been looking in our direction once.
