The book
Winston, Charlie & Blair were all working on manor farm in Bedfordshire, England.
Finest Herding dogs & the best sheepdogs in the whole England.
Winston was seven, Charlie was next at six & Blair was the young pup at four. Winston was always the leader, but the three of them would work as a pack, as a team. Every morning as the dawn broke, the farmer would whistle for his dogs The collies would race out to meet him by the farmhouse. The collies would walk & run the short distance from the farmhouse out to the fields, and from there to wherever the farmer planned on working that day. They lived in the barn. The farmer kept all important equipment in that bran and it was right next to the farmhouse. When the collies finished work in the evening, they would be fed over by the farm house
Winston, Charlie & Blair had all born on this farm. They were probably related as cousins somehow.
It was dawn. The piercing whistle of the farmer brought Winston, Charlie & Blair running from the bran where they liked to sleep. The farmer was down by the house and he had three dogs there alongside him.
The new dogs learned the work from the other three dogs
The new dogs started improving day by day & the farmer praised for the work which he never did for the other dogs. Winston felt there was something wrong and he called for a meeting behind the barn one evening after work The discussed on the changing behavior of the farmer after the new dogs joined They were worried about replacing them with that of others. They were confused.
One morning there was no whistle & all collies woke late. Perhaps the farmer was ill? Perhaps there was some other reason for him to not call the dogs to work today? Charlie looked outside the barn. He found the new dogs working in the farm.
The driver handed a large piece of pink paper to the farmer, which he signed. The driver opened the back of the truck.
It was empty in there, but arranged into a series of cages on two levels.
Winston had managed to read the large words painted on the side of the truck: BATTERSEA DOGS AND CATS HOME The farmer & the truck driver told them to walk into the back of the truck. As each collies passed the farmer he gave the dog a light pat on the head.
While the truck moved Winston explained his thoughts out loud to the other collies, hoping to reassure them.
The collies were confused that the farmer is sending them or it was their first holiday.
When the truck stopped and the door opened they found a new place with unusual smells It was nothing like the farm they had left behind. There were trucks and cars everywhere, hundreds of them passing by one after the other and the noise was horrendous. They were into kennel.
During one of the morning exercise sessions Winston ended up on the lead next to an old and wise-looking Staffordshire bull terrier named Matilda. Matilda explains the life in kennel. Many humans visited this place to select a dog for their home
Matilda also explained that if the dogs do not find their homes for long time they were sent to the doctor from where the dogs never return. Many humans selected Blair and he always refused to walk until they gave in.
After seven years Winston and Matilda planned for an escape during the morning exercise session.
The next morning Winston could not see Matilda during the exercise. She was neither in her kennel.
He assumed that Matilda had ended up in the hands of the doctor. The next morning Winston explains the plan to the other two and then they escape from the kennel. They ran in the direction as explained by Matilda. They reached Alexandra park & built a small den behind a huge stone memorial marked on the front with some strange letters- BOND
One evening Blair finds something near the football pitches & he calls the other two. When they arrived at the boundary fence they could see there was a group of humans with dogs of all different shapes & sizes all out there on the field, led by one human who was leader. They were trying to herd. But they werent herding sheep's. The leader had a goose and he was asking the dogs to heard it back into a wooden pen. Winston, Charlie & Blair watched transfixed The city dogs were useless.
Some of them even attacked the goose & had taken away by their owners. The three dogs just recalled they way they were herding in the farm watching this. Winston watched & watched. He wanted to find a way of taking part & showing the skills he knew he & his friends possessed. But he could not find a way through the fence & they also had no owner. The collies returned each day to the boundary fence to watch & see if the humans & dogs returned again with the geese.
They didnt come for six days, but then on the seventh dayat about the same time- Blair spotted the leader there on the field all alone.
Blair introduces himself to Elvis (trainers dog) and asking for a chance to show his herding skill.
Elvis barked at his owner.
The man looked Elvis & Blair together. And gave a chance to Blair.
CONCLUSION
Winston, Charlie & Blair managed to find a new job even after the farmer found a new way to resource his farm. They found a new purpose & new goals by opening their eyes to possibilities they had not seen before. This is something we can all do. Its becoming something we all need to do. This is an issue that affects us all- not just the collies trying to find a new career away from the farm. As it becomes more common to source service from remote global locations, what is possible to deliver remotely expands in scope.
Companies are now exploring all kinds of services that could never be remotely delivered in the past. The world is changing fast & both you & I need to adapt to that change if we want a job next year.
