Project management
Project management is the discipline of organizing and managing resources (e.g. people) in such a way that the project is completed within defined: scope quality time and cost constraints

Projects vs processes
Projects Building new student centre Refurb of Prince Edward Hall Drug discovery projects Research projects Processes Running exams Admissions Drug safety monitoring Managing Pharmacy shop

n.b. projects have specific time limits, processes are open-ended ongoing activities

Project Management Overview

Projects must be managed as a wholenot as individual elements The goal of all project management is optimally to integrate interdependent elements into a whole Project managers must be able to predict and manage bottlenecks A key planning tool is identifying and tracking the sequence of key chronological milestones and their dependence on other actions Project managers must be prepared to deal with change

Most Common Project Management Challenges

Think of some, we will build a list

Project Management Issues

Issues/factors that might be relevant to a specific project:
Scope management (clear mission definition, duration, organization, remit) Human resource management (selecting, acquiring, and motivating personnel) Information needs management (elements, milestones, background, learning curves) Scheduling and time management ( predicting likely bottlenecks) Scarce resource management (availability, productivity, alternatives) Communications management (type and frequency) Conflict resolution management (negotiation, individual vs. team decisions, escalation) Risk management (changes, backups, contingencies, impact on business) Quality management (feedback, validation, process improvement) Deliverables management (measure accomplishments) Other management issues (external expertise, other as appropriate)

People Management
To enable their people to do what is required, team leaders should:
Make sure that everyone understands what to do. Ensure that each team member has access to all the resources needed to complete assignments Use mid-assignment check-ins with all team members to keep morale high and keep problems from growing out of control Be on virtual 24-hour call to support their team members Use positive reinforcement: rewards and thank-yous should be plentiful

Lao-tzu on Leadership
The Chinese philosopher, Lao-tzu, described his view of team leadership with these thoughts: As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence. The next best, people honor and praise. The next, the people fear; and the next, the people hate. When the best leaders work is done, the people say, We did it ourselves. Lao-tzu

Teamwork

Ten Key Elements of an Effective Team

Think of some, we will build a list

Teamwork
The concept of teamwork represents a set of values that encourage behaviors such as: Listening and constructively responding to points of view expressed by others Giving others the benefit of the doubt Providing support to those who need it Recognizing the interests and achievements of others
From The Wisdom of Teams, Jon Katzenbach and Douglas Smith, pp. 21-22

Project Objectives

SMART Objectives
Specific, Measurable (or at least evaluable) achievement, Achievable Realistic and Time terminated (bounded).

Project management tools: Gant Charts

Each element of the project is scheduled Can also show dependencies

A Gantt chart is a master schedule that graphically shows: target start date, completion date, duration of each component of a project

Decision making: multi-criteria

Allows team to make objective decision when presented with complex criteria

Often used in pharma strategy to decide which projects to fund
