WIND FARM in Santorini

Green Power S.A

Agenda
PESTLE o Political o Economic o Sociological o Technological o Legal o Environmental

SWOT o Strengths o Weaknesses o Opportunities o Threats

PESTLE: Political
One major issue concerning the development and utilization of alternative energy sources is the lack of political will to support such endeavor.

PESTLE: Economical
The economical development of Wind Power in our country is promoted by: o The growing demand for electricity o Emission Rights o Economies of scale o Favorable regulatory framework The Return of Investment is very high in this type of investments The selling price of energy is set up with long term contracts The Operational cost is very low Due to low volume of sales the technology is expensive Assists rural development by giving landowners income from land leases

PESTLE: Sociological
Local communities often dislike such investments due to aesthetic issues. Generally accepted as "Green" technology. People are now well informed about the specific technology Satisfies increasing need of electricity due to tourist growth (e.g Greek islands)

PESTLE: Technological
The technology is changing very often The wind farms should be connected with the existing energy network

PESTLE: Legal
Approvals from public agencies

PESTLE: Environmental
Relatively minor environmental impact compared to the correspondent impact of traditional energy sources Certainly preferable to produce electricity in a way which has the smallest possible impact in the environment The scale of the ecological impact may or may not be significant, depending on the circumstances and can affect the following issues: Land use Wildlife Birds & Bats Climate change People o Safety o Aesthetics o Noise

SWOT: Strengths
The wind is an inexhaustible energy source and nature provides it for free. Wind energy is a technologically mature, economically competitive and environmentally friendly energy alternative. It protects the Earth, as every kilowatt hour produced by the wind replaces a kilowatt hour produced by conventional generating plants, which pollutes the atmosphere with greenhouse gases. It does not burden the local environment with dangerous gas emissions, such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, cancer causing microscopic particles, etc. as conventional electricity generating plants do. It enhances energy independence and security which is especially important for Greece and Europe in general. It contributes to the decentralization of the energy system, reducing energy transmission losses.

SWOT: Weaknesses
The turbines usually have to be sited in isolated windy spots, that are also often areas of outstanding natural beauty. The noise from wind turbines has been blamed for health problems including stress and insomnia. Wind turbines only work at maximum capacity for a third of time, meaning they have to be backed up by other technologies such as coal and nuclear. The inconsistent power generated by wind farms requires the agrid to be upgraded to cope with the surges in power. Wind farms are expensive to build and only last up to 25 years. Bureaucratic delays Very hard to get the Licence by several Public Departments (e.g. aerchological dept) Dependence on the weather and the geographical spot (e.g. less windy areas) Taxes (35%)

SWOT: Opportunities
Fight climate change even though in the medium-term. The technology produces no greenhouse gases once it has been installed. Decrease reliance on volatile energy supplies from abroad. Manufacturing and installing wind farms will provide green jobs and consequently reduce unemployment. The technology is becoming cheaper as wind farms are built around the world. Very attractive to Funds Increasing Cost of traditional energy types (e.g. fuel) Economical Scales in operational costs

SWOT: Threats
Incur erosion and denundation of land Loss of landscapes' scenery Cause rock-blasting (clear the ground of rocks) Affect the tourism of the island due to the homogenization of landscapes Greece does not have a "stable" strategy for renewal energy investments
