Evaluation is the step in the assessment of process in which measures of quality and productivity are examined against some standard of performance gates et al. 2002

DEFINITION OF THE TERMS.

GRADING: - DEFINITION: Grading involves quantifying data and assigning value. Grade serves two purposes. Grades notify student of their achievement as it related to them and others and inform the public of students performance. It involves establishing outcomes and verifying the extent to which these have been achieved. ACCREDITATION: DEFINITION: Accreditation serves as a mechanism to ensure the quality of educational programmes. Accreditation signifies that an institution, school or program has defined appropriate outcomes, maintains conditions in which they can be met, and is producing acceptable outcomes.

PRINCIPLES OF EVALUATION: Determining and clarifying what is to be evaluated always has priority in the evaluation process. Evaluation technique should be selected according to the purpose to be served. Comprehensive evaluation requires a variety of evaluation techniques

PRINCIPLES OF EVALUATION: Proper use of evaluation technique requires an awareness of both their limitations and their strengths Evaluation is a means to an end, not an end in itself.

CHARACTERISTICS OF EVALUATION: Evaluation is a continuous process. Evaluation includes academic and non academic subjects. Evaluation is a procedure for improving the product. Discovering the need of an individual and designing learning experience. Evaluation is purpose oriented.

PURPOSES OF EVALUATION: Properly used, evaluation procedures can contribute to improved pupil learning by Clarifying the intended learning outcomes Providing short term goals to work toward Offering feedback concerning learning progress Providing information for overcoming leaning difficulties and selecting future learning experiences To diagnose problems to find learning deficits, ineffective teaching practices, curriculum defects and so on. To improve products to revise a text book, to add content to an independent study module. To judge effectiveness to determine whether a programme is self supporting.

PURPOSES IN NURSING EDUCATION:Heidgerkken list down the following functions of evaluation in nursing education. To determine the level of knowledge and understanding of the students To determine the level of students clinical performance To become aware of the specific difficulties of individual students or of the entire class, as a basis for further teaching To diagnose each students strength and weakness and to suggest remedial measure, which may be needed. To encourage students learning and by measuring their achievement and inform them of their success

To help students to acquire that attitude of and skills in self evaluation To help students to become increasingly self directing in their studies To provide the additional motivation of examinations that provides opportunity to practice critical thinking, application of principles, the making of judgement etc... To estimate the effectiveness of teaching and learning techniques, of such content and of instructional media in attaining the goals of the programme To gather information needed for administrative purposes

PURPOSES IN NURSING EDUCATION:contd..

OBJECTIVE BASED EVALUATION:Instructional objectives

Learning experiences or instructions provided Evaluation

FUNCTIONS OF EVALUATION: Functions related to instructional processs:Measurement function Diagnostic functions Guidance and remediation Motivating function Assessment of the final output Classification and placement Prognosis, prediction and selection

FUNCTIONS OF EVALUATION: Functions related to total educational system: Improvement of inputs and process of education Maximisation of the output

TYPES OF EVALUATION:Evaluation can be classified in the following ways Based on the frequency of conducting, evaluation can be classified into summative and formative evaluation. Based on the nature of measurement, evaluation can be classified into maximum performance and typical performance evaluation. Based on the method of interpreting results, evaluation can be classified into criterion referenced and norm referenced evaluation
