Electronic waste ("e-waste") is the fastest-growing waste problem today.' When

certain electronic items such as:
Computer and Computer Accessories

Copier Machine
Televisions and Radios Printers and Fax machine

Cell phones
Dead battery and other Electronic devices

which reached the end of their useful lives, they become classified as e-waste.

Fig 2. E-waste Disposed

2. Reason For Increasing E-waste

The reason for the increasing of e-waste is the increased of product which is caused by:

Development

Technology
Human mentality and Population

2.1. Development
o

There are over a billion personal computers in the world.

In developed countries these have an average life span of only

2 years.
o As their life span end we must address the question of

disposal of large numbers of "end of life" computers and other IT equipment.

o

We can now also understand that this industry is globalizing

at a fast rate or rather an alarming rate. ALL of this is because of development caused by globalization.
7

2.2. Technology
Now a day technology is growing at lightning fast speed.

This technology results in the coming of newer products

and appliances.
New electronic product are invented everyday. When this product and appliances lost their value they

became e-waste.

2.3. Human Mentality

As human mentality increase ,the money they

generate also increase.

This money power has helped them buy more

electronic products.
Because of money power people now a days tend to

substitute their older materials with the newer ones

and this older materials if electronic related is what is

termed as e-waste.
9

2.4. Population
If one person buys one computer so with

increasing population the number of computers

would also increase .
So we can conclude that with increasing

population the amount of e- waste also increase.

These product would be thrown with the

introduction of better technology.

10

3. Impact of E-waste
Electronic waste(e-waste) cause problem on

the:

Human health

On the environment
Workers exposure

Child labor at recycling site

11

3.1. Human Health

The main risks to human health arise from the presence in e-waste of heavy metals, flame retardants and other potentially hazardous substances

Breathing difficulties
Respiratory irritation Coughing and Choking

Neuropsychiatric problems
Convulsions Coma and even Death .

Skin disease
Eye irritations and Stomach disease
12

3.2 .Environment
E-waste has hazard substance such as : silicosis , dioxins, lead,

copper, cadmium, poly brominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB),chromium , mercury phosphorous and other metals. When these substance released to environment

they cause
Soil deterioration Water pollution Eutrophication Air pollution
13

3.3. Workers Exposure

The process of recover invaluable materials takes place in

small workshops using simple recycling methods.

Materials containing copper (wires and cables), steel (internal

computer frames), plastics (housings of computers), aluminum

(printer parts)
In doing so workers are face many health

Problems such that mentioned above.

14

3.4. Child Labor at Recycling Site

The exposure of children and pregnant women to lead,

mercury, cadmium and other heavy metals, as even relatively

low levels of exposure can cause serious and threaten the development of the child .
Child laborers working as scavengers or waste-pickers.

neurological damage

15

4. Possible Solution of E-waste

4.1. Local Solution
Local government and the operators of recycling services but

also on community participation, together with national, regional and global initiatives.
Awareness raising programmers and activities are also needed

16

4.2. International Solution

A possible international solution would be facility based

shipment whereby any company seeking to export e-waste

would have to sign a contract .
The countries involved must have national e-waste

legislation in place.
Capacity training plays a key role, and a wide variety of

stakeholders in both importing and exporting countries

need to be trained and educated on the issue.
