The Formation of Fossil Fuels

Raw Materials
COAL
-black rock -sulfur combined -mining -open pits-men work -200 years -Industrial Revolution (transportation) -conveyer belt -pipelines -facts: refrigerator, stove, water heaters

OIL (crude oil)

-drilled -ancient seabeds - oil left behind -shape of rock (pore droplets) -oil wells -tankships & pipelines -produce plastic, paint, etc -80 years

NATURAL GAS
-colorless/odorless -made up of methane -drilled -seabeds -gas wells -100 years -processed (impurities taken out) -No ash/ few air pollutants -1/5 of U.S energy

Energy Generation
Power Plants

Energy: Coal, oil,

natural gas 1.Burned

2.Heat
3.water boils 4.steam blows (turbine) Turbine: generates the electricity

Economics
-American consumers and businesses spend $700 billion - $1 trillion a year. -85% of U.S energy supply depends on fossil fuels -Clean Coal Technology:U.S government has invested more than 3 billion to develop -$360 billion used importing fossil fuels to U.S

Economics Part II
Coal:

-Demand on coal has grown in mid 2012

-Coal prices are lower than natural gas Oil: -By 2030 oil cost: $200 per barrel

-$1.3 trillion out of $1.6 trillion spent on oil

-Oil is becoming scarce Natural Gas: -contributes $380 billion to U.S economy -hydraulic fracturing: easy, safe, and cheap

Environmental Impact
Coal: -Burned coal releases Sulfur dioxide.

-Damages land, open pit mines.

Oil: -Oil spills. Natural Gasses:

-Greenhouse effect.(Global warming)

-Acid Rain

Advantages & Disadvantages

Coal Oil Natural Gas Advantages -powers all appliances available at home -Does not cost as much as natural gas -New technological filters have been created -no new technology needs to be created to be used -easy to transportation -Does not produce smoke -100 year supply of natural gas left

Disadvantages

-A large sum of Sulfur Dioxide can harm humans -makes Earth's surface have many holes because of mine pits --Coal is a dirty fuel to burn

- As the years go by oil with me much more expensive -oil spills harm marine wildlife

-Contaminates Drinking water -Families are moved from their lands -Cost more money to store natural gas than oil

Fossil fuels are nonrenewable and once they are used they disappear into the atmosphere creating the earth pollution. 85% of the U.S depends on fossil fuels.
