The Energy Thread

Energy is integrated into many of the departments core courses There are 7 courses with a major focus on energy This is an area of great student interest

ChE 150 Spring 2006, 4/25/06 Department of Chemical Engineering CALCULATING WIND TURBINE SIZE
A wind farm is set up to generate 100 kW of electrical power. The wind distribution velocity has been measured and found to obey a Weibull distribution with the form: The units of v are meters/sec and the wind power equation is given as discussed in class, i.e. What is the total cross-sectional area required by the turbines to generate this power? What are the turbine radii for one, two and three turbines respectively?

ChE 273 SENIOR CAPSTONE DESIGN PROJECT FALL, 2007 DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS AND ENERGY INTEGRATION ANALYSIS OF A CHEMICAL PROCESS FOR MANUFACTURING XYLENE ISOMERS
Provide a clearly drawn graphical flowsheet schematic showing the optimally integrated flowsheet. What are the energy requirements and savings in KW- for the integrated design for both and compared to its unintegrated counterpart (i.e. the process as shown in the project handout) The marginal cost savings of energy, and capital investment required to reduce energy consumption are given by the following expressions:

Heat exchange network Integrated flowsheet graphic External utilities required for fully integrated pilot scale flowsheet including: exchangers, coolers and additional energy, if any, for columns. External utility savings as a result of energy integration compared to process energy requirements as given for pilot scale plant: Optimal for cost functions given Amount of reduced carbon dioxide emissions on an annual basis for full-scale plant in metric tons per year-value of these carbon dioxide credits ($ per year) at current market value.
