AIM: To investigate if there are regional differences in the use of antimicrobials for preweaned dairy calves and to visualize such differences on maps.
287 Swedish dairy farms Representative in geography and herd size

Systemic sulpha-trimethoprim
Used on 22% of surveyed farms. No significant regional differences were observed.

Systemic benzylpenicillin + dihydrostreptomycin (DHS)

Used on 18% of surveyed farms.

Farms

Systemic ceftiofur
Used on 1% of surveyed farms. No significant regional differences were observed.

Systemic benzylpenicillin
Used on 80% of surveyed farms.

Systemic fluoroquinolones

Used on 13% of surveyed farms.

CONCLUSION: There are regional differences in the use of certain antimicrobials for preweaned dairy calves. Maps that illustrate these differences can be used in regional specific campaigns against the use of certain antimicrobials.

Full line circles encircle areas where a significantly higher proportion of farms use the antimicrobial than areas outside the circle (p<0.05). Each color represents one type of antimicrobial. Dotted line circles illustrate clusters of farms that have a significantly higher treatment incidence than farms outside the circle (p<0.05). Each color represents one type of antimicrobial.
