Effects of Climate Change on Indian Economy

Basic Concepts
Climate is
Kind of average weather

Climate Change
Changes in the long term average weather patterns

Include changes in
Temperature Humidity Precipitation Wind and so on

Objectives of the Study

To study the effects of climatic change on Indian resources To study the methods to reduce the effects of climate change To suggest suitable policy measures to control over this problem in our country

Effects on Himalayas glaciers

The main effect of climatic change is increased earth temperature because of global warming, which resulting in the melting of Himalayas glaciers. A study of 466 glaciers, which included small mountain glaciers and ice fields in three highly glacierzed basins of Chenab, Parbai and Baspa in Himachal reveled a 21% reduction in glacial area from the middle of the last century, from 2,077 to 1,628 square kms, reduction in mean area from 1.4 to 0.32sqkm fragmentation of glaciers that is much higher than realized

Effects on Agriculture
The GDP would decline by 1.4 to 3% points due to climate change. They have analyzed that a 2C. temperature rise and 7% increase in rainfall would lead to an almost 8% loss in farm level net revenue. The food and agriculture organization (FAO) has warned that India could lose up to 125 million tones of cereals.

Effects of Forest
Vulnerability of maintains ecosystems assume more importance when one realize that the global change in mountains will have profound effects not only on hill people but also those in the adjoining plains. The mangroves are constantly under threat from increasing anthropogenic pressures, such as reclamation, urbanization etc. In our country 30% of the mangrove area has been reclaimed for different anthropogenic activities

Effects on Sea level

The next effect of climate change is sea level rise. Though a sea level rise in some Indian Coastal cities has been quite mild so far, less than a centimeter a decade, it did not specify its rise in recent years. Villagers on Gujarat Coast and in the sunderbans have seen their lands, wells, homes eaten away by rising sea levels. This erosion started 35 years ago.

Effects on Indian Monsoon

The recent record of extreme weather patterns in India reveals that. The first monsoon revives 25 June and 4 July 2005 claimed no fewer than 200 lives in the state Gujarat. About 4, 00,000 people had to be evacuated and insured losses amounted to approximately US $50m. In 2006, there were unprecedented floods in Barmer district of western Rajasthan, where the average annual rainfall is hardly 120 mm.

Future prediction events in India due to climatic changes

Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Prediction Regional climate models suggest 2.5-5 degrees Celsius rise in mean surface temperature. Regionally within India, northern India will be warmer. 20% rise in summer monsoon rainfall. Extreme temperatures and precipitations are expected to increase. All states will have increased rainfall except Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu where it will decrease. Crop yield decrease. Especially the of loss of wheat and Rabi crops are more. It threatens food security of India

Suggested Remedies
Protect the existing forests and encourage afforestation Create awareness among people about how the changes in human life pattern and modernization affect the ecology as well as human life. Disturb the nature only to the minimum level. Popularize the non-conventional energy sources and utilize them to maximum Approve only those projects which are ecologically sound and feasible Analyze regionally the atmospheric changes due to green house effect and try to solve them accordingly Minimize the use of chemical in agriculture and popularize organic farming Nature being our mother, it is the duty of everyone to protect the Mother

Conclusion
Climate change is a dramatically urgent and serious problem. In order to sustain a fast pace of socio-economic development, immediate action is required on the part of government exports, media and the public at large to slow down climate change. It is the duty of the individual to protect the nature their country. Hence, the only and the combined action on the part of each and every individual to stop climate change can reduce its impact on our planet earth.
