Bricks are mostly used in building constructions. (Walls, foundation, column, retaining walls) Bricks are made chiefly from non-organic materials Main materials: - clay - sand - lime - cement
INTRODUCTION
Methods of manufacturing bricks: - Hand-made - Pressed - Wire-cut Standard size 215mm (length) x 102.5mm (width) x 65mm (thickness) Well-made bricks are hard and durable.
TYPES OF BRICKS
Three types of bricks: Clay bricks: 1) Common bricks 2) Facing bricks 3) Engineering bricks 4) Fire bricks Silica bricks/ sand-lime bricks (calcium silicate) Cement bricks
Types of Bricks
B) Facing bricks -Pleasant looking texture -Capable of withstanding the effects of weather
-Used for constructions that do not need to be plastered because of pleasant appearance
Types of Bricks
C) Engineering bricks -Very hard, dense and do not easily absorb water D) Fire bricks -Able to resist high temperature
-Mainly used for walls carrying exceptionally heavy loads. Examples : retaining walls , foundation -Mainly used for constructions that need to resist high temperatures like kiln or boiler
Types of Bricks
2. Sand-lime bricks/ -As an alternative silica brick (Calcium for replacing silicate) Common Clay Bricks -for internal and -Materials rear walls hydrated lime
Clean sand ratio of 1:8
Types of Bricks
-As an alternative for replacing Common Clay Bricks -for internal and rear walls
Disadvantages
Plastering work requires skilled workers Low tensile-strength
