His full name is Zainal Abidin b Ahmad

Born in 1895 in Bukit Kampung Kerdas, Jempol, Kuala

Pilah. Received formal and religion education in a Malay school in Linggi. Further his studies at St Pauls Institution, Seremban. The first Malay to sit and pass the Senior Cambridge Examination in 1915. He entered the teaching profession as a Malay language teacher at the English College in Johor Bharu. At that time, he had already started writing seriously and producing an article entitled Temasya Mandi Safar di Tanjung Kling.

Two years later, he was transferred to Malay College

Kuala Kangsar. At that time, he had already developed an interest in fiction and succeeded in contributing articles to several newspapers, magazines and English periodical. Beginning of 1923, he was working as a translator in the Federated States and Federation of Malaya Education Office in Kuala Lumpur. A year later, he becoming a lecturer at the UPSI and translator. He successfully contributed translated works to be published in two Malay language periodicals, that is Majalah Guru and Al-Ikhwan.

In 1939, he was transferred to the Information

Department in Singapore. 3 years later, he left for overseas to work in the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. In 1954, he returned to Singapore where he took up the post as Malay Studies Department Head in UM until 1959. With Royal Professor Ungku Aziz, Zaba succeeded in arranging for the formation of the students language body and formation of Persekutuan Bahasa Melayu, UM. 1959, he resigned because of health reason and in 1973, he passes away at the age of 78.

Following his fathers footsteps, he used the title Al

Hulaimi and later changed to Al Helmi meaning one who does not show his anger. He held on to several principles and practices like gentleness, honesty, patience, good manners and calm in politic or personal affairs. He is a devout Muslim who loved reading, and writing.

In 1924, he pursued Islamic education in Sekolah

Agama Sungai Jambu in West Sumatera. In 1926, he furthered his education at the Pondok Pulau Pinang, Jitra, Kedah, then he went to Madarasah Al-Masyhur Al-Islamiah in Penang. He was offered a scholarship to further his studies to India and he chose to specialize in homeopathy. He became the first Malay to be qualified in homeopathy. In India, he befriended several famous nationalist like Gandhi, Nehru and Mohd Ali Jinnah. He had the opportunity to visit the university in Santinikatan founded by Rabindranath Tagore.

Malaysias Father of Education

Born at Chemor, Perak.


Early education in Sekolah Melayu Chemor. His secondary school is Sekolah Anderson, Ipoh, the

best English school in Ipoh at that time. In 1946, he formed the Persatuan Pelajar-Pelajar Melayu (PERMI) in Perak. He was offered a place in Raffles College in 1947 and a year later he formed the Gabungan Pelajar-Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (GPMS)

He was forced to stop his student union activities

because was offered a place in University Malaya, Singapore. He became a temporary teacher at the Anglo Malay Night School from 1949 until 1951. His involvement in GPMS was reactivated in 1950 when he was the leader. In 1951, after obtaining his Arts Degree with Honours, he returned to Perak to teach at the Sultan Yusuff English School, Batu Gajah.

Then, he was transferred back to his alma mater until

July 1952. In 1953, he returned to his country and became a lecturer at the Sultan Idris Teacher Training College. At the age of 36, he was appointed the Selangor Chief Education Officer and then Malaysian Chief Education Advisor. He was also a member of the Senate in University Malaya, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka and so on. In 1965, he died of a heart attack.

Was born in Kampung Pulau Betong, Balik Pulau,

Penang in 1934. Primary education at the Sekolah Melayu Balik Pulau, and then in Sekolah Melayu Kuala Ketil, Semiling and Gurun in Kedah. After second world war, he went to Sekolah Melayu Seberang Perak, Kedah and Sekolah Melayu Sungai Korok Lama.

From 1951 1954, he underwent teacher training at the

Sultan Idris Teacher Training College and graduated with excellent result. two years later, he sit for the Lower Certificate of Examination (LCE) at Kedah State Education Department. A year later, he obtained his Malaysian Certificate of Education (MCE), and went to study at the Language College, Johor Bahru. Between 1961 1964, he furthered his studies in University Malaya, specilizing in the art. His Masters Degree was in education. In 1972, he was conferred Doctor of Philosophy by Stanford University, California in US.

He became involved in the teaching profession as the

teacher trainee in Sekolah Melayu Gunung, Kedah in 1950. In 1957, he became a National Language teacher at the Sultan Abdul Hamid College, Alor Setar. Two years later until 1959, he worked as an assistant lecturer at the Day Training College before being transferred to the Language Teacher Training College, Lembah Pantai in Kuala Lumpur as a lecturer (1964 1969). A year later, he joined University Malaya as assistant lecturer at the Education Faculty before being appointed lecturer in 1969.

Starting April 1974, he was the Dean of the Education

Faculty, University Malaya until 1 September 1978 when he was appointed Director of Institute Technology Mara. In July 1980, he became Vice Chancelor of University Kebangsaan Malaysia.
