What is social Media?

SOCIAL MEDIA ARE PRIMARILY INTERNET- AND MOBILE-BASED TOOLS FOR SHARING AND DISCUSSING INFORMATION AMONG HUMAN BEINGS. THE TERM MOST OFTEN REFERS TO ACTIVITIES THAT INTEGRATE TECHNOLOGY, TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND SOCIAL INTERACTION, AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF WORDS, PICTURES, VIDEOS AND AUDIO.

History of Social Media

Social media sites have altered the face of

communication. Business communications in particular have become more personal and profitable due to the development of social media. In the beginning, it was introduced in 2002, Friendster (www.friendster.com) was the first social site, followed by MySpace (www.myspace.com) a year later. Started by two friends, MySpace became extremely popular, and its parent company, Intermix, was acquired by News Corporation for $580 million two years after MySpace was launched.

History (Continued.)
Facebook (www.facebook.com) came out in 2004 initially targeting

college students, but later welcoming everyone. Following Facebook were TagWorld (www.tagworld.com) and Tagged (www.tagged.com). TagWorld introduced tools for creating more personalized Web pages, and Tagged introduced the concept of building tag teams for teens with like interests. Social networking sites compete for attention much like the first Web portals when the Internet exploded onto the scene in the mid-1990s. Variations are emerging all the time. Social media is a way of communicating on a personal level rather than through advertisements, brochures and newsprint. By using social media, you converse with others and they respond to you. Gone are the days of the big advertising blitz with million-dollar ads on television or in print. Some still use them, but social media sites are getting the word out in a much more personal, effective and economical way.

Facebook played an important role in the PROCESS OF SOCIAL

CHANGE. As an example we can see recent national protests, in Tunisia, Egypt, and elsewhere in the Mid-East heavily relied on the Internet and social technologies like Facebook in the early stages to accelerate the social protest. Although in Egypt, the government attempted to squelch new organizing technologies by largely shutting down the Internet and cellphones, but it was merely the role of facebook through which people came on to the roads for protest and the movement became successful for revolution. "Social media is primed to play a role in Egypt as well. More than 90,000 people signed up on a Facebook page for the Tuesday protests, framed by the organizers as a stand against torture, poverty, corruption and unemployment. But the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, Egypts most powerful opposition movement, said it would not officially participate, though some of its members joined the protesters in Cairo. YouTube's early headquarters were situated above a pizzeria and Japanese restaurant in San Mateo, California. The domain name www.youtube.com was activated on February 14, 2005, and the website was developed over the subsequent months.

Youtube and Social Change

Before the launch of YouTube in 2005, there were few

easy methods available for ordinary computer users who wanted to post videos online. With its simple interface, YouTube made it possible for anyone with an Internet connection to post a video that a worldwide audience could watch within a few minutes. The wide range of topics covered by YouTube has turned video sharing into one of the most important parts of Internet culture. An early example of the social impact of YouTube was the success of The Bus Uncle video in 2006. It shows a heated conversation between a youth and an older man on a bus in Hong Kong, and was discussed widely in the mainstream media.

Role of SMS in Social Change

The text message on the mobile read, "This election, if you think

that none of the candidates deserves your vote, choose 49(O). It is like saying `none of the above'. If more than 33 per cent choose this option, we will have a re-election." Time Asia's article "U say U want a revolution" lists countries (Spain, China, Hong Kong, India and the Philippines) in which text messaging has brought about political change. From Pakistan we have a recent example of assassination of Salman Taseer, Governor Punjab by his own security guard Mumtaz Qadri. A campaign has been running by SMS which says If u think Qadri is innocent, forward the message otherwise delete it. According to a report 70% people are forwarding this message which shows that 70% people of the whole nation are in the favor of Qadri and they want him to be released because they think that he did right in the name of ISLAM therefore he is innocent.

The service has also been used in emergencies and political campaigning. Protesters have been inspired by the recent uprising in Tunisia, vowing to stay on the streets until the government falls. Twitter appears to have been periodically blocked inside Egypt. It played a key part, with supporters inside and outside Egypt using the search term #jan25 to post news on Tuesday, but it was blocked later in the day. Hence it can easily be said now that Twitter is at the leading edge of the social media movement, allowing members to connect with one another in real time via short text messagescalled "tweets"that can be received either via the Twitter site or by email, instant messenger, or cell phone.

Blog and Social Change

But no matter what the topic or nature of your blog,

if you have an audience, you can use your blog to create social change just by spreading the word and doing something. And it doesnt matter how big your audience is. Even if you have one reader that will be one more person who is more educated about an issue and who may take action. The simple act of informing people about problems in society can go a long way towards creating action. Change has to start with education and information. And bloggers are in a fantastic place to provide that.
