TYPES OF NON-FICTION TEXTS


Non-fiction texts can be divided into six main types: information texts - provides clear information about a subject - attempts to convince the reader to think about or act on something or accept a writers opinion using evidence for support recount texts - written about something that happened - may use a descriptive, story-like style although it is factual (e.g. biography)

instruction texts - instructs the reader, giving clear guidance about how to do something - e.g. recipes, directions, manuals and plans
explanation texts - presents facts, discusses ideas, or explains a process - e.g. textbooks, reference books

persuasion texts - tries to convince you to do or agree with something - contains a mix of fact and opinion and often seems to speak directly to the reader - e.g. magazine articles, newspaper reports
argument texts - should be balanced and fair, and give all sides of an argument before coming to a conclusion - discusses an issue, considering all points of view
