From Pupil to Student

Taking responsibility

Are you a Studentyet?

In

elementary school, those attending class are called pupils At RHS, we want you to become students What is the difference?

The pupil

The pupil
Must

attend school (not the pupils own choice) Does not have much influence Has limited responsibility for learning Do what you are told!

The Student
The

student
chosen to attend school

Has

Is given influence, and should use it Is responsible for learning Think about what you are told!

Being a student is about your attitude towards taking responsibility

Taking responsibility

The six levels of responsibility

Denial (lowest level) Lay Blame Justify Shame Obligation Responsibility (highest level)

Denial
Did you prepare for today? I told you to do some assignme nts What? We didnt have to prepare for today No you didnt!

Assume full ownership for learning Do what you are supposed to do, because you want to do it May even go beyond what you are supposed to do, simply because you are curious and want to learn more

Responsibility

The responsibility for making sure that I learn something lies with

YOU!

Old-fashioned

lectures only take up about 20 % of the total time you need to devote! You will not learn enough just by hearing lectures, and doing nothing else! Expect to use as much time to self-study, as you use at the school! Otherwise, you will remain a pupil
