Functionality of Clothing

SAD Presentation By Sam Banerjee

The wearing of clothing is exclusively

a human characteristic and is a feature of most human societies. It is not known when humans began wearing clothes. Anthropologists believe that animal skins and vegetation were adapted into coverings as protection from cold, heat and rain, especially as humans migrated to new climates.

Studies suggest that clothing may have been

used as long ago as 650 thousand years ago much longer than previously thought. Alternatively, covering may have been invented first for other purpose, such as magic, decoration, cult, or prestige, and later found to be practical as well.

Some simple purposes of early clothing were:

To protect from weather extremities To protect from beasts and animals Humility and social conscience.

Over the years, clothing changed from being just

a basic need of people to being a canvas for various mindsets and whims of a personal mind and the society as a whole. The concept of coverage became a personal one, and as days passed in the books of history, clothing slowly turned into what it is today.

Some of the causes of the change in clothing are:

Need for separation of classes.

Need for superior expression.

Need to stand out. Modernization and globalized change.

There were many factors that have affected the growth curve of clothing since it was first incepted by the Early man. These reasons can be broadened as:
Social and Political reforms
World War Womens and youth

empowerment

Advancement of science Evolution of uniforms.

Some factors that affect the way people dress now, are as follows:
Protection from hot or cold weather. Protection during hazardous activities such

as hunting, hiking, cooking and the production of arts and crafts.

Protection from situations such as fire or the

effects of warfare or terrorism.

Social identification of the social class of

strangers by means of informal clothing styles or uniforms

Identification of members of a

particular team, group or political affiliations.

Deception involving the use of disguise Social intimidation or reassurance by associating

particular forms of dress code .

So, we can see how clothing evolved through the

ages, depending on different purposes and needs of people. Modern day clothing is ever evolving, and one can only guess where the path of dressing will lead to, next.
