SOCIAL MODEL

1. MODEL OF GROUP TEACHING AND CO-OPERATIVE LEARNING

According to the programmes of KBSR and KBSM:

Group teaching can be implemented in two different ways: a) Group pupils according to their abilities (similar ability group) b) Group pupils according to their different abilities and inclinations(interest).

(mixed ability group)

Organization and Management of Group Teaching

Similar Ability Group: - Consists of three main groups which are the high achievement group, average achievement group and low achievement group. - Normally, majority pupils in class are of average ability and not many of them are bright pupils or slow-learners.

- As such, a class may consists of several average achievement groups with one high achievement group and one low achievement group. - This type of grouping is suitable for teaching and learning of certain skills, such as mathematics and language skills, as well as remedial and enrichment activities.

Group of pupils with different abilities in each group: - Every group is formed by high, average and low achievement of pupils as mixed-ability group. - Suitable for learning activities such as brainstorming, science experiment, projects, and competitive activities such as games and quiz.

Effective organization and management of group teaching ought to be based on the principles of group teaching.

Management of Group Teaching and Learning

Teacher should move around from one group to another to supervise and guide the pupils, whenever necessary. Teacher is also required to spend some time to teach slow learner pupils, when the other group activities are in progress. Teacher should appoint a leader for each group to handle certain specific duties such as to control group discipline, guide and lead members to carry out group activities, distribute and collect learning materials, and so on.

Teacher should spend some time to discuss with pupils about the activities done by each group so all of them can learn the activities that has been carried out. Display group work in class for reinforcement. Teacher should also guide pupils to make a summary report on activities which have been learned.

Steps of Implementing Group Learning

1. Carry out group activities after normal class teaching/ after certain basic skill is taught. 2. The teacher performed a whole-class teaching to teach the pupils certain concept or basic skill before the group activities are carried out.

3. Basing on the concept or basic skill which has just been learned, pupils will be allowed to conduct their respective group activities according to instruction given by the teacher. 4. After group activities are over, pupils should be assessed, followed by consolidation activities.
