What is verb + ing ?

Examples :
drink + ing drinking
shout + ing shouting

When do we use verb + ing ?

We use the verb + ing in the
Present Continuous Tense and
Past Continuous Tense
 The Present Continuous
Tense
We use the Present Continuous Tense to talk about
events that are happening now or occurring
temporarily.

Examples :

 Jane is reading her book now.

 My mother is talking to Uncle Sam at the
moment.
 The boys are cycling at the park.
 The Present Continuous
Tense
We also use the Present Continuous Tense for plans
and arrangements in the future.

Examples :
 Mr Lee is painting the house next Thursday.
 Mr Thomas is leaving at 10 o’clock.
 We are going to Malaysia for our holiday.
 Mrs Lee and Jane are visiting the dentist
tomorrow.

 The Past Continuous
Tense
We use the Past Continuous Tense to talk about
events that began before another, and finished
after it.

Examples :

 Sally was reading when her mother called.

 When the phone rang, Peter was ironing his
shirt.
 The Past Continuous
Tense
We use the Past Continuous Tense to talk about
events that had already started and were still
continuing at a particular time:

Examples :
 At five o'clock, it was raining.
 Johnny was doing his homework at ten
o’clock last night.

Tense
We use the Past Continuous Tense to talk about two
events that were both continuing at the same time in
the past. In this situation, we use the past
continuous for both actions:

Examples :

 Mum was cleaning the house while I was sleeping.

 Sally was crying while Mr Lee was listening to the
radio.

1. To form the verb for the present or past continuous tense, we

usually add ing

eat eating
sleep sleeping
draw drawing

2. When the verb ends in an e, we need to drop the e and add ing

paste pasting
change changing
write writing

3. If a one syllable (with only one vowel sound) verb ends in one
consonant (for example p, t, r) that follows one vowel (for
example a, o, e), we double the consonant.
