Rwanda is a country with a small population which is located in the continent/region of Africa. Countries near Rwanda include Burundi, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. Its biggest cities and towns include Kigali, Butare, Gitarama and Nyanza.

The Genocide
The genocide is a result of tensions between the Tutsi and Hutu for many years The genocide began on April 6th, 1994, when the Rwandan president, a Hutu was killed. The Hutus took this opportunity to blame the Tutsi for killing and started a massacre against the Tutsi People from both groups were killed because of their similar looks. No one was spared.

Canadas Involvement
Canada is a part of the United Nations, which made many efforts to help out during the genocide.

Canada contributed volunteers, which helped out in orphanages, and spent spare time doing positive activities to help out the Rwandans

Human rights were abused dramatically throughout the genocide. Racial discrimination against the Tutsi Women were abused and raped throughout the genocide by Hutu soldiers Racial persecution against the Tutsi

Controversial Issues/Questions
How can Rwanda remain a peaceful country if there is so much tension between the two largest population groups? Why are the Hutus so demanding for power within Rwanda? How can Rwanda ensure that another genocide does not happen again between these two powerful parties? Canada along with many other countries are working with the UN to help prevent another genocide within Rwanda

The Genocide Aftermath

By the end of the genocide in 1994, nearly 1 000 000 people were killed, mostly men 1 in 16 Rwandans were dead. Both Tutsi and Hutu were killed Rwandans are having trouble moving on from the situation, as there are scattered memorials and massive grave sites throughout Rwanda

Canada as Peacekeepers
The Canadian peacekeepers exceeded expectations during the situation in Rwanda For their efforts, each member received admiration from the United Nations and most importantly, the Rwandan people.
